Official Feature Wishlist

I'd like to request not allowing Youtube and other videos or very large gif (I mean ones used as "decoration" on bottom/top of pages, not cel gifs) to be embedded on RS gallery pages.
The video file itself is not hosted on Rubberslug, thus RS's bandwidth is not being used. Likewise, the file does not play automatically. A visitor has the option of clicking to start the video. I don't think featuring a video file in your gallery is against the rules, nor should it be. Save for explicit content.

Youtube and Photobucket videos are Flash based (.flv) files which are very small, compact, compressed that allow us to share samples of our favorite shows. What better way to introduce people to a new program? They may even learn why you like a certain show as much as you do, and why you collect it.

Seeing the static cels is one thing, but seeing them together, moving, with sounds, it's much more entertaining. I have no idea why someone would request this to be banned. What it boils down to is that the viewer has to click on the file to initiate play. These are not automatic players.

Animated gifs, on the other hand, are completely different. Those could slow down people with dial-up connections. I don't think you can go so far as to ban gifs. That's a little outrageous. The most a user can do is just avoid galleries that have large animated gifs.

Repeat: video files hosted on Photobucket or Youtube will NOT slow down your connection. You don't have to view them if you don't want to.

Well perhaps we can add a feature that allows us to disable viewing the YouTube feature in people's galleries?

Also, just so it doesn't get forgotten, can a complete forums search feature be added? I know too many people are asking for information asked and answered in older posts. If we can search the forums for the info and point people to the appropriate threads we can work to reducing this clutter and locking and/or deleting the redundant threads. Thanks.

I know that the Youtube videos do not load unless you hit play. Rubberslug is a cel gallery, I can understand if you link to a small clip of where your cel is via the specific cel page, but there are people who are posting the Youtube video on their front page that have nothing to do with their collection, they just link to an amv or something. It has nothing to do with cels which is what Rubberslug is about.

Also you would not need to ban ALL animated gif, there are easy scripts out there that limit uploaded size of files.

Who's to say what gif size is too large? Would there be a vote? I have a high speed connection and personally don't have any problem with large gifs. At that point, you're limiting a gallery owner's creativity and power of choice. It's their gallery, they should be able to do what they like. They've spent a substantial amount of money and time amassing their collection and should be able to present it however they please. Especially when the solution is as simple as "just don't look." Some galleries have hideous color layouts that I find repulsive, can we ban those too?

We've already debated to death the "not cel related" issues on here. Plenty of us have personal pictures in our photoalbums, as well as non-cel related gallery themes. We are even allowed to link to non-cel related websites in our links section. You can even checkout my non-cel related artwork in my gallery. So why do the videos have to be limited or restricted? The videos are not hosted on RS, so I don't see why RS would particularly care (unless it was offensive or explicit, of course).
