Hate to say it...
As always, I'm coming in late.
I sort of see both sides here. I'm one of the people that does have a "Coming Soon" section, and I do it for organizational purposes. It's easier for me to store the images here than on my hard drive, because this way I can add what is coming in from either home or work.
I understand that it is annoying to see a bunch of updates on the front page that are all hidden. But, I am with Uende on this in that my "real" updates have been bumped off just as quickly with lots of "real" updates. It's just the luck of the draw for the day/hour your update. If you really want to announce to everyone that you have updated, then I think that the cel blogs are one of the best ways to do so.
But in the meantime I'll move my coming soon section to my other gallery so that I don't inadvertently bump others off the front page. Tex-chan and any others that are thinking so, please don't close your RS gallery here.
And if some are thinking of closing their galleries it's a shame because it amounts to the same thing, depriving people of the pleasure of viewing their cels.
I wasn't going to post in here again ... and I'll probably regret doing this. But ... *jumps in with both feet* (eeeek! scary!)
No one is deprived of seeing my cels. They are all still up on my main gallery for viewing ... but I can run that gallery however I like and use the gallery space in whatever way I see fit without offending anyone or upsetting anyone.
With the extra stress that's been ongoing and building in my real life for the past several months ... well, having fun in this hobby has become more important to me than ever.
I just wanted to make it clear that, although this thread was the final straw that pushed my decision to close my gallery on RS (along with several other things), I do NOT have a problem with any of the collectors in this thread. I am not angry with anyone over anything that was said here, and I just didn't want any of those misunderstandings hanging out there --- since my last post was rather abrupt.
I'll still be around RS, off and on --- replying to weblogs and such. I just felt it was important to me to step back for a good, long while ... until I could maintain my gallery on this site without having to worry about offending so many people.
Hopefully, that all came out right and made sense. >_<
I too am a bit late coming to this thread >_<
As a user of a hidden "Coming Soon" section, I don't mind seeing those kind of updates. Actually, it just gives me a heads up that the galleris owner may be updating with some cool new cels in the near future =D By no means do I use my hidden "Coming Soon" secion just to get on the frontpage. Like Uende said, the cels I purchase are 1st and foremost for my own personal enjoyment. It's a very, very nice bonus that thanks to the good people of Rubberslug, that I'm able to share them with everyone else ^_^ So while being on the frontpage is pretty neat once in a while, it's really not a priority for me.
Like others, I really use mine to keep track of any cels that are en route. Also, I use mine to write my description of the cels such as general information and what they mean to me. I love the Rubberslug interface while typing descriptions vastly over typing them out in MS Word, and prefer to type out my descriptions before the cels arrive. That way, by the time the cels are in hand, a good description is already written so I can update right away :D
Also, while it may not be the front page, one can easily go under the "Galleries" link and click Recently updated galleries. That way, the last 20 galleries updated can be viewed. That way even though a gallery is knocked off the frontpage, there's still a good chance you can see the update in that section. And the weblog is always a really good tool to notify the RS community that you've updated as well ~_^
I know that it's not any specific gallery that's in question over this hidden "Coming Soon" discussion, but I make sure to disclose right on my homepage that if anyone is ever interested in my coming soon section to just let me know ^_^
My apologies for the rather lengthy post, just wanted to voice my opinion ^^; Have a wonderful day everybody!

I think there are a few different topics going on here.
1. False updates on the front page. They are very frequent. Yes, I'm sure there are people who don't use a hidden coming soon section maliciously and yes, it's possible to check recent updates and yes, it's a good idea to do a search and perhaps advertise your update on your weblog. But even given all this, I still don't think it's unreasonable to expect an actual update on the front page. People are suggesting ways to find updates other than relying on the top 6 galleries advertised on the home page, but isn't it more logical that people give suggestions about how to ensure that an update on the front page is legitimate? That's what the function is there for afterall, no matter how quickly galleries get knocked off.
2. Closing of galleries. I'm not quite sure how and where this all came up. Who's closing what, and goodness gracious...WHY? Because of this thread? I find that hard to believe and I certainly hope that is not the case. This is a forum and it's here to enjoy a little discussion and also to voice some concern. And I'm glad this was brought up because I think it's worth discussing.
Heck, in the end all any of us want to do is enjoy each other's galleries and let others enjoy ours as well. Maybe there's some dispute about how to best do that, but it doesn't mean we appreciate our fellow hobbiests any less.
Keep on keepin' on,

This tread got real serious real fast. let's try to keep it light.
If someone wants to close their gallery please let's let them do it without public drama. If you're their friend and want to convince them otherwise let's do it privately.
I have no problem with people opening or closing their galleries. You wanna close it?, more power to you.
Let's not have any of that " see what you did?,you made him close his galllery" stuff.
Let's try not to use the update section as an organizational tool until it's fixed so that it doesn't apper on the front page.
Let's not try to come after me for my post cause I know martial arts.
Let's not leave the dishes overnight.
Let's not wait until the last day to pay the fix-it ticket because if forget you'll have to pay $350 instead of $12.
When somebody asks for a shoulder massage let's try to give them one that lasts longer than a minute.
Let's quit putting too much food into the dish we bought for the neighbors cat cause it's the passum that eats most of it at night.
Let's always get a carfax report before we buy a used car unless we wanna pay $1050 in repairs.
Let's not try to add $350+ $1050 = $1400 = alot of nice cels that could have been bought
Let's try to remember that we are superior to people that don't collect cels
Let's know that social security will be paying around $20 a month by the time we retire.
Let us(cel collectors) start planning for world domination now, so that by the time we are sixty and retired we won't have to sell our cel to put bread on the table.
ME LOVE YOU
