Do you go for quality or quantity?

From my perspective, when I love a show and its characters buying as much as I can find is important to me. But it all depends on what type of collector you are.

I'm a completest and like to get images of characters showing their different expressions/clothing etc and cels/setups which sum up a scene. As such, if there's 200 cuts in a 25min episode, I'd aim to get at least 200 cels which encompasses all the above qualities.

There are other collectors who are content with a single shot of their favourite character/scene and these will tend to be high end pieces- rare and expensive because that shot is likely to be the favourite of another 1000 fans too, all eager to acquire it.

I can see the appeal of both collecting directions.

Sensei's point rings true with me as well, I like to see the whole production process from settei and sketches through to the dougas and final cel/rilezu. This entails amassing a great quantity of artwork.

As ws pointed out, it's not to say that a large quantity denotes poor quality.
I happen to have 400+ cels and 200+ cuts of sketches from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure but consider the vast majority to be of excellent quality in terms of physical condition and aesthetic composition.

But the most important thing is what the image represents to me, emotionally. Even a 'poor-looking' shot to a layman means something significant to me such as the build up to an important moment in the story or a sense of movement in response to something a character said or witnessed. It's all these little reminders of a great story that is essentially priceless and denotes the quality of the piece itself.

To me, quality is often evident through quantity.

Klet, you seriously need to chill, otherwise you will burn out of this hobby soon. No one is telling what to like or dislike. Seriously why do you even care if the majority "share" your opinion? I certainly do not, I collect for only one person myself I do not care if 100% of the world's cel collectors share my beliefs regarding cels and doing so makes things so much easier. I am just trying to help you understand it does not matter if people share your opinion, there is no right answer. And even if there was, if it does not resonnate within you then why do you even care?

Excuse me Mahoro but where do you get off lecturing Klet on what she should or should not believe for her self. I guess you don't think she is entitled to an opinion that happens to differ to yours?

Hmmm...you know, I've tried to give this topic considerable thought before posting.

I remember when a similiar thread was on Beta when I was new to collecting cels and my answer was a simple "quality", however, I don't know if that's always accurate. Quality means many things to many different people; Some view quality as artwork in a particular style(as is evident on this thread) and others view quality as those cels that run several hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

I think the only word I can use to quantify what I collect is 'artistic caliber'. I make regular use of the "all cels" catagory on YJ; if I see something that draws me in, then, regardless of anime title(and sometimes cost), I'll go after it. This has spurred me to watch a lot of anime titles that I would have otherwise not been inclined to watch.
Personally, I hate the topic because of the way that certain collectors seem to think that their collections are much higher quality than everyone else's.
Hey, my collection IS higher quality than most everyone else's collections. But it's only better to me because it contains the pieces I painstakingly chose for myself to spend a crazy collective amount of money on. Hah!

Good points about the flaws of this question. Explains why it doesn't inspire much of a response from me. It's pretty much either "quality" or "quality and quantity". I do like quantity (of different cuts) when it comes to sketch sets...makes them more interesting to receive. However, I bid on them for 'quality' of at least one sketch or cut.
