Do you go for quality or quantity?

Ooo Klet, I?m glad about your post, because I was thinking many of those same things! I don?t think people would or should buy cels they don?t want?I want a lot of cels, and I like them all! From some series I enjoy a wide variety of expressions, characters and scenes, others, I only want a few characters from, sometimes, I just like the look of a particular pose. So that?s what I buy. Some are expensive, some are cheap, and some are even free. I think they all are worth viewing. I don?t think quantity adds to or subtracts from their value. This is one of the reasons I don?t use the item count feature. Sequence mates of some of the very cels described by others as "wishlist" cels can be found in my collection. But if they are displayed with many other cels from the same series, instead of just a few, does that mean they become "quantity"? instead of "quality"?

Hi amy,

I think just buy what makes you happy. Other people will always have opinions but since you're the one buying the cel, yours count the most. It's hard to define what a quality cel is really, there are general conventions people follow "visually" which often times raises the price of a cel comparatively speaking. If buying cels that are cheaper but less appealing to others, but it allows you to buy more of your favorite cels, then why not? For example I'd really love to have a ton of little cel images of Saitou Hajime just because the character is my favorite. I often complain to friends about why aren't there shots of his back, even butt shots or just plain teeny ones... LOL. Of course I wouldn't pay too much for those shots but I know I will buy them if the price is right. I'm not really thinking of what others will think when I buy or when I display it in my gallery. Sometimes we don't have a choice and all that is available is what others would consider sub-prime cels, like some of my Voltes V collection or sometimes all that's available are prime shots that cost an arm and a leg. If those make you happy and you have the money to spare go buy it too. Just don't forget to do you math, you might be buying a conventionally prime shot but might experience buyers remorse when you look at your bank account. You might be buying cheaper shots but you also know you are doing it guilt free. It's all up to you. Good luck! ^__^
Oh and one last thing, never ever buy something just because it seems like everyone likes it. Don't collect for the fad, popularity comes and goes. That's why I think there's a lot of turnover in the community at times.

I concur with hajimenokizu, you need to collect what you truly love and that is entirely subjective. So long as buyers remorse is kept low IMO we all can collect whatever we like however we see fit.

And klet there is not need to hate this topic. For many people addressing this question helps them to understand how to best proceed with collecting cels. Sometimes it just is not financially practical to collect a large quantity of characters or shots regardless if the price is inexpensive. Even $20 to $50 cels add up fast when the quantity reaches the hundreds. We all have different and highly subjective definitions on what we consider "quality". No one definition is the universal truth, so again no need to hate it when others do not share your opinion.

Hajimenokizu, I think I may have one of the very teeniest Saitou Hajimes of all!

Yes, on top of this nearly 3ft. tall background is a cel. And down near the bottom is a one inch tall Saitou, facing off against a similarly miniscule Sagara Sanosuke!
