When Should A Gallery Be Deleted?
Galleries should never be deleted for inactivity (unless it was Jason saying "we need space", or Jason otherwise saying to delete them).
I'd say people should never delete their own collections, too. Sold items should be moved to a sold section.
It's also common to not respnd to compliments. "I like your cels" does not even imply a response is expected. If someone wants to chat they will. If not, they won't.

I'm not sure I get the point with regards to "people should never delete their own collections". That's really up to the collector and we should be respectful of their privacy if that's what they want. I don't agree with a sold section either but I've already expressed my opinion about that in AB. Maybe it's not common to respond to compliments, but it would be -polite- to write a short thank you to someone who took the time to write you a little something. I think the community should be a bit more polite to each other, which I'd like to believe they are. Most of the people I've written to has been nice enough to be. If one doesn't get a response then people shouldn't take offense because for all we know it might be going to spam (which apparently RS mail function is prone to do and some even set it up that way due to spambots).

If it is only polite to respond to compliments, then it is only polite to not compliment someone as it in theory creates an obligation (under these rules of politeness) to respond, which is an imposition of the will of the complimentor on the complimentee (barring invitation to compliment). This of course means that in the presence of the unsolicited compliment, to the extent it demands a response, there is evidence that politeness is absent from the exchange on the part of the complimentor, and the complimentee is therefore free from having to respond, as politness is not a factor in the exchange.
And while as a rule for the site it only makes sense to allow people to remove their collections so that those crazy sometimes cel hiders will share their information for some period of time instead of hiding it always, the removal of collections impoverishes the available information for the community. To the extent a gallery owner cares about providing visual information to the cel community, they should leave their materials up. But as a practical matter, to the extent their gallery is all about their personal ego, concerns about the knowledge their gallery represents to the cel community will not stop them from suiciding their gallery (or torching their actual cels, for that matter).
Frankly, I think your response is just playing with semantics. Politeness is not an obligation, it is being civil, refined and cultured. If one can appreciate animation art, one should be able to appreciate human values as well. When a person replies on obligation to be polite then it loses sincerity and is not being polite. In this case it probably is better not to respond... Or better yet place a note on the gallery that says, "Unsolicited compliments are not welcome in this public gallery and so expect no replies." It kind of takes the appreciation away. So what is the point of having the art visible? One might as well hide it... But yet it stays visible... For what? Ego?
I find it contrary that one should be worried about impoverishing the community by hiding cels. I think one should be more worried about impoverishing the community by not fostering an appreciative, supportive, respectful and understanding attitude... A good atmosphere in the community will encourage people to share and not hide their cels. It is not right to dictate to collectors what they should be doing in their galleries. No one should be obligated to show their cels. Also if you don't own a cel anymore and the previous owner decides they do not want the cel in public and asks you to remove it, then it's not right for the previous owner to show it even if in the interest of the community. It's like when someone takes your cel pictures and uses it on their website without permission or even when you tell them not to do so.Ah but I think this is getting a bit off topic. What I'd rather hear really is the thoughts of the mods in RS about "When Should A Gallery Be Deleted?".

I think that deleting a site that has not been updated in a while is well...."Heartless"
Really....Really....Really....Super...Heartless....
I was on hiatus for about 2 or three years (dealing with life), and If I had come back to see my gallery deleted...well...It would feel horrible....
*Well yes, some people just post a picture of their cels, and heck if you delete it, they could at least just make a new gallery and just add them again (if their collection is small)....
*Some of us do add some words (info here and there) Screen caps, and so forth....
If my collection was deleted, I probably would not even attempt to make a new gallery, since I would say "WHY even try? the thing will get deleted anyways....."
***Just think of it, if it was you, and you had to deal with life, or something major happened and you could not help it.....****
-------------------------------------------
Now.....why don't some people respond? It could be the "spam folder" factor or something else
-------------------------------------------
On empty galleries....not much to say here.....
