i scream, you scream

Possibly the most unusual poll question yet. It struck me as I was cleaning out my freezer that I'm not exactly sure when ice cream goes bad. If you take a stroll down your local grocery ice cream freezer isle, you'll find an amazing amount of novelty and variety in the kinds of flavors that you can freeze with milk these days.
Because of my blasted consumerism streak, I tend to buy quite a few of these. I've got tiramisu ice cream. I've got Girl Scout Cookie ice cream. I may have some kind of candy bar branded ice cream. I'm not sure. It looked so yummy.
But then it struck me.... does ice cream go bad? I'm sure it does... but how do you tell?
Usually I only throw ice cream out if it has frost bite on it, where it gets ice all over it. It tends not to taste very good after that...
When it has little tiny ice crystals, that's when you don't want to eat it.
...or after the "best buy" date! :D
I'm not a big ice cream fan, but my husband is, and he's gotten me into covering the uneaten portion with celophane to keep out the air. That's what promotes the ice crystal formation. That way, when I only eat a little of my favorite Ben & Jerry's, I cover it with the celophane, and I can come back a month or so later, and it's still good.
Hope that helps.
You mean it lasts more than a week?
Not in my house. It never stays uneaten that long.
I cannot really judge it ... I always eat it right after buying it ... *g* ...
but I can't imagine, that it goes bad so fast ...
