Buying anime dvd's you've never seen

I actually live in Japan right now so I am always buying anime I have never seen before. I might have snippets of it from TV but never really watched it. Of course I do run across the occasional one that I can't wait to pass on to my friends in the states who sale such things.

Yeah, I do that almost all the time actually. Almost nothing do I see even a bit of before I buy it. But almost all of the time I buy bootlegs, so this doesn't cost me much. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

Almost all of the anime on DVD I buy I've never seen before. I read blurbs on them about the story or just the character designs interest me and I buy them. Only recently have I started to buy cels from anime I haven't seen...not a good sign.

All the time, I treat it like looking for a good book to read. If the story sounds good, I'll give it a try. I've only ever bought one cel from a series I didn't know, and that would be one of Aya from Weiss Kreuz. To tell the truth I still haven't seen the series..

Sure, I'll occasionally buy anime DVDs that I haven't seen prior to the purchase. It doesn't happen that often, since I see most things at least once through Netflix as a way to try them out. Every so often, though, Netflix takes a long time to stock a show that I'm really interested in seeing. In that case I'll skip straight to the purchase. The most recent example of this was Kaleido Star.

As for picking up cels from shows you haven't seen, amusingly enough that's exactly how I started out collecting. I had never seen Words Worth, but started my collection by picking up a cel of Nina ^_^.
