How best to split a series?
I have a question for everyone here. Earlier Xelloss posted a thread about whether people prefered more sections with less cels or fewer sections with more cels, and the first option won out. This also followed well with the types of comments I was getting on my own gallery, when I had all my Battle Athletes cels in a single section. Thus, I split that show up by character, figuring that would take care of the problem for good.
Well...it hasn't. Because I can't help myself, I have bought so many new cels that I'm getting complaints again about the size of some of my gallery sections...but this time its already split up by character so I do not have this option again. Instead, I need to figure out a new way to split the show up so I don't have a hundred cels in a single section.
Which brings me to my question. How would people prefer to see it broken up? Maintain the seperation by character? Change it so it is seperated by episode? (This would give me 28 sections instead of the 19 I currently have, and would be better averaged out) Some other way, such as "Akari gallery 1, 2 etc, or Akari w/bg, Akari pancels...)? I want people to enjoy looking at my gallery, so I'm looking for ideas here. This is also important because only about 60% of my Battle Athletes Victory cels are actually scanned, so every section will be getting a lot bigger, and soon. So I would like to sort them in a way that makes sense, but that is also easy on the eyes. Any ideas?

Hmm, that's a tough one.
For starters, and this is strictly my personal opinion, I think nine cels on one page is too many. I feel it just crowds the cels and I personally am less likely to really notice them.
I do think your Akari section could use a split. I would say split them up either by timeline in the show if you know what episode each is from, or perhaps by outfit. I prefer not splitting up by being over-sized or having a background because for me it's nice to know the content of a section before you click it.
That is just my thoughts, but hope it helps anyway.
I think I may be running into the same issue with some of the series I collect. I have so many cels of characters like Miao from Tsukikage Ran that I think most will be over-looked.
I also have around 40 Boogiepop Phantom cels that I think may end up in the same gallery because I don't think it makes sense to break up the gallery. I don't have enough pictures of the same character to really make it worth while to have a character dedicated section...
I think it all depends on what you want to do. With your Battle Athletes cels, I would say that it would probably be good to have a Akari 1, Akari 2, ... Akari 1000 gallery to look at. Since your Battle Atheletes collection is probably the largest on the planet, I think people who are interested in the series may enjoy your gallery more if it was in smaller chunks.
Personally, I agree with the 6 images per page setup. I have been gradually converting my series sections to be displayed as such. I think that I may split galleries once they get above 5 pages deep. I find that once I get to the 5th page of someone's gallery I just jump to the next section anyway...
Now see, this is very helpful. I had just switched from 6 to 9 cels/page to help cut down the total page count in my Akari section to under 10 again. Apparently this was a bad idea. ;) Maybe I'll try and split it by story arcs. Have to think about this before I scan any more of my cels.
Speaking of which, I wonder at what point a section is "too large"? I would think, say, the 40 Boogiepop Phantom cels would be fine in a single section if there was no clear way to split it up...but probably 50 would be a bit much.
And if you think my Battle Athletes gallery is large now...just wait. I have literally *hundreds* of cels (most with matching background) left to scan in. Why? Don't ask. ;)
That's just way too many. Sell them all and start fresh! :)
You could categorize them by quality(A,B,C...); outfits; face, full, or bust shots; expressions; episode(although some of us wouldn't know which episodes had the better images)...
I think 9 images per page is fine, especially with large collections.
Don't worry much about what others think. As long as you're happy with the setup, that's all that matters.
If all fails...purge, purge, purge! Make other collectors happy!
