How best to split a series?

I think "too large" depends on what you want to do with your collection. If you want to show off more of your better cels, then "too large" is wherever you feel your visitors can handle in a particular gallery section. If you want to hide some of the lower quality cels, then "too large" could be a higher page count.

With my Boogiepop and Blue Gender cels, I have some cels that are duplicates. I tend to try to "hide" these by putting them at the ends of my sections. This way it will take a more dedicated person to see them all...

I also ran into this problem with my Now & Then, Here & There cels of Shu. For me it was easy to brake the cels down into DVDs and episodes (3DVD with ~5 episodes each). As for cels per page, I've posted one or two rows with 9 cels per page. I like the look. For some of the other series I have three by nine per page is the standard.
So, my suggestion is to breake them down by by episode, 28 sections would be easy to go to. Plus for those people who haven't seen all of the episodes it may help not having the collection becoming a spoiler for them. IMHO

Agreed, best ones up front. A lot of people don't want to look through 10 pages. Showing the good ones up front gives us the option of continuing or moving on.

If you do it by episode, which might be best, have one general category from the series with a few of your favorites, maybe simply titled Battle Athletes. I get discouraged when I see a list on the gallery page with 20+ subcategories. I never know which to look at and might not even bother.

I'm currently doing 9 cels per page... although some sections (*cough*xelloss*cough*) still have 50+ cels in them. I think dividing my cels up by section would take forever and have little added value, but if it makes sense for you, go for it ^^;

I tend to organize my cels by quality in sections... so the first page usually has higher quality than the second, etc. Granted, if a group cel has xelloss on it, it automatically goes to the top, regardless of its quality ;-)

i liked how when gallery owners have massive collections...They break them down by character...Or even in some cases, episodes. What you can do is break them up by character and have a background section, and a non-background section for each character. That would be a good way to break it down even further.
