The Official Ban Request Thread
In accepting the job of Mod, you understood it would be a tireless, thankless, payless occupation. As such, you are obligated to answer questions and deal with the masses. There's no reason to be condescending or to belittle members for asking questions. Even if they've already asked the same question earlier. The policies of Rubberslug change fairly often and there's been a long running debate about the rules. Wouldn't it be better to be safe than sorry? Asking the same question a month later may garner a different response.
I don't blame Matt for requesting clarification. And as for providing examples, that's something one of the other mods mentioned. Members in violation often cite "well this other person was doing it" as the reason. Well, Matt was providing explicit examples of things that -might- be considered violations of the rules. I doubt he hoped that these galleries would be closed down, he just wanted to provide proof of such activities.
I've had to ask the same questions a few times myself, just to be sure. It seems some members get to do whatever they want while others are blasted immediately upon first violation.
When posting non-cel related art in my own gallery, I spoke directly to Rhey in the RS chat. I received her approval and permission prior to posting anything non-cel for the exact same reason Matt has brought up. Rubberslug is a CEL site and I did not want to violate the rules by posting NON-CEL related items.
A lot of people are too shy to post a question or to contact mods, so someone else speaking up provides those silent individuals with a voice. When you answer these questions in a manner that could only be described as utterly rude and demeaning you serve only to alienate the community further. Perhaps allow another mod to address a question that bothers you so much.
Matt has the right to ask questions...Ryan has the right to be bothered. We're a community. We're a HUMAN community. Not everyone is going to agree. Please stop tossing the blame around. "He said this...She said that." This is a FUN forum. We all have a common interest. Let's enjoy it. It's too bad that we can't all have a "face to face" weekly RS club. I think everyone would be less hostile. But this way we get to see and share collections all over the World!! I've made some good online friends because of this site and I hate to see this kind of thing.
The Mods work hard and are going to get stressed from time to time. Was it a little harsh (what Ryan said about self appointed Mods)? Yes. Was there truth in Ryan's statement? Yes. It's not just aimed at you (Matt)so please don't take it as such. Enjoy sharing your galleries with others that have a simular interest.
...really. I hate to see anyone stressing out about other people's galleries. Enjoy what you have. If you see someone posting nothing but pictures of thier Bottle Cap Collection and Insect Porn then (by all means) mention it!! Everyone just relax...and enjoy.
Everyone I've come into contact with here has been sincere and kind. Mods or otherwise. Let's get back to the Fun!!!

I agree with you. But couldn't JWR take his own advice and approach Matt in private? Instead of making a public display. It's just annoying to see a mod talk down to someone like that. It evokes the feeling of "why should I even bother asking if I'm going to be humiliated publically?"
JWR isn't the only mod and I see no reason why he has to accept the entire burden here. As I suggested before, if a question bothers you, allow another mod to handle it.
There's no such thing as a stupid question. Again, it's better to err on the side of caution.

Hmmm...I really didn't see how Joe was talking down to someone. Joe is a good guy here and in person. If I had to answer someone several times I would start becoming more frank as well. Which, I think he was doing...Being frank instead of insulting. Some people just take answers differently than others.
Also, as it's being talked about in other posts...
All of the answers he was seeking is in the rules. Anyone can always feel free to post questions. They are also free to contact site management as well to seek answers. Most all of the mods are busy. Joe took time out of his busy day to answer the post, when no other mod would. No mod has yet to answer, but just may when they have the time. Jason knows these guys and gals and trusts them to man the ship while he's away.
So, no use getting ya'alls panties in a twist.
Hmm.. I smell adrenaline.
It's hard to write and communicate so that the real intent of the message is clear and not twisted, particularly in chat or on any forum.
When you can't see a face or hear a tone.. sometimes things get construed to mean something that were completely opposite of the intended statement(s).
I tend to be blunt online, because although people may not like it, they know that I'd never BS them.
Sometimes Mods are speaking to the "audience" and not directly at the poster when giving replies to issues. I really don't think JWR was personally directing that last paragraph in question to the poster, but was speaking in general about a better way to handle it. He was broadcasting, albeit on a two-way line.
JWR is one of the most soft spoken and kind MODs that are on staff. Luckily, we've met personally and that makes it all the more easy for me to see that this is just one of those strange misunderstandings and communication worm holes.
I think that people are responsible for not over-reacting and inflaming A and B conversations.
I do see however how that paragraph could be taken at face value as being harsh and unwarranted. I doubt that it was meant to be.
We above all want you guys to have fun!! Do you know how long I begged Jason to write in code for a shop?? Create a FAQ? And on and on??
We are always looking for ways to improve and give you all a great place to come relax, share, and laugh. Because we are you-- collectors, otaku, anime lovers, and such. A part of you is in all of us. I could go on but you see where I'm headed. We definitely have everyone's best interests at heart, even the ones that deserve the least get a second chance. So, be kind.
JWR did ask the poster to contact him via feedback with his concerns. Indeed, I recognized that post and it did seem at first helpful, but the poster went on to argue "defending Jason?s policy" with another member, on so on. This statement is not quite accurate.
It is called doing too much, with not enough information, but with good intentions. It would have been prudent to ask the questions before taking any action, instead of the inverse.
We try our best not to offend anyone, especially JWR. I know I'm rough around the edges and that's no secret. But JWR?? It's laughable to those that know him.
I for one love the effort of the poster, but the content and the execution of the plan needed to be more thought out. He got caught up as a result. We in turn end up putting out forest fires.
It is always more polite to contact one of us first in cases like these where more than one or two galleries are in question for whatever reason, instead of posting numerous "wrong-doers" (in your mind), and then base those decisions on some wrongly interpreted policy statements and without "authority to do so", should be obvious.
If anyone feels slighted by Mods, enough to leave the site, I feel most of all it was my fault. I've been around a long time. I'm the designated ax-man. And I'd be the first to apologize-- or not.
But, honestly feeling threatened by JWR.. I have to crack a smile..
He's a teddy-bear =)
Hardy-har-har..
(He'll get me for that one..)
Peace and tidings of joy
