fixing the interface

What's the most annoying thing about the site management interface? A list of annoying things or just one thing is good. I imagine some of you out there have very long lists. Bring 'em on.

For starters, I'm probably going to separate the management page into "modules" so if you want to edit your about page or links page, you can upload graphics and site text and whatnot all on the same page. As it is right now, it's just slightly ridiculous.

What else is there? You all work on your sites way more often than I do. What would you fix/change?

Well, aside from the "secondary sketch" bug, where you have to add the cel, then go back in to update it to actually add the second sketch (unless that has been fixed recently?) the big thing I would want fixed is the way series titles are managed. Once you add a series name, it is there forever in the drop-down list when you go to add or move a cel. There is a little check box that you can get to when a series has at least one cel in it that says to "Delete Series when no items and trash empty" but it doesn't seem to work - and you can only access a series title when there is at least one cel in it.

Ok, I admit it, it is only annoying because I misspelled Miscellaneous the first time and I keep accidentally adding things to the wrong section ;)

Well... since you asked. The site text modification page could really use a "go" button next to the pulldown... when I'm using mozilla or firefox, the pulldown does not automatically change the page content, as those browsers don't use the same event types as ie. The same is true of the site graphics page.

Hope that made sense ^^;

The "Links" page is broken.. I think.

Some of arrows (up/down) don't work to push items down..and there is something wrong with the default page description edit button function (It disappeared on my page). Basically, some of the edit features are out of whack.

btw, is is possible to expand the description box on the links page to a larger size without too much hassle? I personally tend to write too much.

Good list so far. Keep 'em coming.

- Gabriel: I never understood this one until just now. It's fixed. Sorry I never got to it before. For the series thing I will probably redo how series are done. I have to redo the series thing to be more like the links section (make folders inside folders). It's a big n-tree, if that makes sense to any coders out there.

My goal for this week is to port the item database to the new, nestable catagory format. Something bad may happen (as is always possible whenever I add/fix really big things). The weird "non-empty" series bug is a result of very bad database programming from 2001.

- Karen: Yeah, I got it. Tell me if that works. I used a button with an click handler. I'm quite surprised that mozilla and whatever else don't support onChange. Are you sure you don't just have Javascript off or something?

Keep in mind though that I don't bother testing in anything other than the browser that 96%+ of the population uses... wish I could, though.

- Eric: Uh... That could be a Rather Bad Thing. I can't seem to break it. Can you point out which links are not moving on your site when you click on them? Text boxes have been changed from 8 lines to 12. Lemme know if more is preferred, it's a 10-second fix.

"Default page description edit button function"? Did I call something that? Er... can you describe what it does? (How embarassing, it's my own website and I don't even know how half the stuff works.)

Oh, side note: can the Mac folks out there give me a running tab of all the broken stuff there is that's likely to be Mac-specific? I can't fix that stuff right now probably but I do need a record of it for when I go out and get a used iMac or something to test on. I should be getting a Mac sometime in the next two months to help with the development of this site.
