Desperately needed new feature

Several of mine are on there. I will first try asking the person to take them down.

Howdy, I'm back in Austin and well-rested. My priority is fixing Rubberslug for the next week barring any unusual real-life work.

Okay, here's what I *wanted* to do... the fact that our image manipulation module is busted will probably speed this up:

As far as image uploading on Rubberslug goes, I would like for people to be able to go practically from scanner to website. In theory, all you would have to upload is one large picture and from this picture you could make a) thumbnails, b) a medium sized graphic for display when people click on the thumbnails, c) a final zoomed in version.

I have a way in mind so that no one will be able to link to an image off-site (ebay, other websites, etc.) as well.

I'm going to be working straight through the weekend to find a way to restore image editing functionality and possibly improve on it. This suggestion came exactly at the right time, thanks.

We have an auto-watermarking capability and it's been in the system for over a year, but I never got around to making it an on/off thing. Also, it never really worked well with GIFs... but the GIF copyright has expired so we can do that now.
Contact their web host and explain to them that you have had your copyrights violated.
But I'm fairly certain you'd be lying if you told them that. I mentioned this in another post that although we own the cels, I'm fairly certain we do not own the "copyright", which would imply that you own the character. I'll probably call the local museum one of these days and ask. I'm curious.

In the US (Canada also?), Viz (I think) has the right to tell him to stop. Even then, they would have to be able to prove damages.

I'm not condoning this kind of thing, just pointing out that in such a unique hobby, we should make an effort to understand the unique legal aspects of it.

The only defense really is to make really crappy scans that no one would want. But if you're not having fun at that point, why bother? *shrug*

I have a few ideas off the top of my head on how to vaporize a poorly funded, poorly maintained website like the one this guy seems to run. But I'm not an angry person and I prefer to use my powers for good.

I won't do anything to him, but I know more than one of you are quite capable network engineers, so feel free to have some fun. All you have to do is find a way to use up his, what, 100GB monthly transfer limit? Easy.

If you want a non-technical avenue of destruction, try writing letters to the American publishers of all of these shows and tell them about the little "disclaimer" at the bottom of his page that hosts all these screencaps.

Hell, just threaten to sue the pants off him. Tell him you're from the Department of Homeland Security. Tell him that he's in violation of Section 142.B, Paragraph 8 of the Kyoto Animation Distribution Accord and each image carries a fine of up to 25,000 yen. He seems too stupid to call your bluff.

Remember, snail mail sent to his home address looks way more scary and official than e-mail.

But seriously though, it's really just some kid with a big allowance. I wouldn't want to be known as Noisywalrus, Destroyer of Websites, now would I?

This is who your archnemesis is: Balmukunda Paneru. Doesn't this seem a little silly now?

I've
got a few ideas for copy-protecting scans. I'll try them this weekend.

I don't want to go to any extremes to explain the copyright issue so I will say it this way:

The company (or artist) that produced the cel, or its rightholders that could be actually the distribution company or some other entity, ultimately holds the copyright to the show, image, character, etc. Sometimes the artists famous or not actually are not the copyright holder either, since many of them are asked to sign contracts giving those rights up. Anyway...

"Your" copyright as a cel buyer is created when you post your owned cel on the Internet. In other words, you "scan" and "post" (display) your cel on the Internet is a copyright that you own. But it is all thin slices of a bigger pie.

There have been many, many, posts and arguments on this topic on the "Animanga Forum" in the past. If you want to confirm this, look through their archives. I have participated in these deliberations ad infinum. There is one going on now and actually, THIS THREAD was started over there too! I did not participate since I have heard the arguments many times already, but just for your review check out what is going on across the way:

On this page:

More
specifically:

http://www.eu.animanga.com/db/celsbook/cmd=thread&aid=35495&template=message.html&indice=14589329&var=tstart=1&var=tnb=30

Save
the "BIG" threats for last.

In all reality, no one is going to court over this. But reputations could be bruised. Or accounts could be closed. That is about the best realistic outcome to the offended party in question.

That's all I have to say about it.

How does this strike you all as a new feature?

Compare:

Old way:
http://xelloss.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=51576

New
way:
http://xelloss.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info2.asp?ItemID=51576

Points
of interest:

- The transparent rectangle and text would be the same colors as your site and they can change if your site scheme changes.
- The site will auto-shrink your cel to 300px wide in the detailed view. I could make it so that if you click on the 300px image, the full-size scan would show up in the new window.
- You can turn the feature on and off on each cel.

You can mess around with this on your own site by simply changing "inv_info.aspx" to "inv_info2.aspx". It's won't work as advertised just yet because right now everything is hardcoded (i.e. -- you'll get an "Anime Cel Incognito" watermark on your cel... don't worry! not permanent, all drawn in real-time).

Let me know if you can think of any other features you'd like for image manipulation. The goal is to be able to jump straight from scanner to website without any weird Photoshop stuff required.
