feature galleries

I agree that periodic mod approval is necessary to keep "bad" images off the front page. I think a quick glance through imgs and a release is less time consuming than making the imgs themselves.

I was also interested to know whether we would control the mini thumbs in the gallery/update listings, or if that was random by way of "last updated" or whatever. I'd prefer to have control, but that's more coding of course. The only way to keep those thumbs clean in a random version is to have the gallery owner mark them as "adult" in some way.

It's currently set to get your 3 most viewed items from that particular set. I think we can skip manual selection and here's why:

1) My official position on naughty bits: After looking at a few other sites try and fail, it's clear to me that people are going to have to accept that Rubberslug is for mature audiences in the same way that The Onion or even Penny Arcade is. The reality is that kids don't have money to buy any of this stuff. And a lot of it is unavoidably work-unsafe if you go looking for it.

Rubberslug is a comparatively inefficient way to find porn. We'll perform reasonable restrictions so you don't get "ambushed" by boobs if you're trying to look at something at work, but if you search the site for hentai, you're getting hentai. If you search the site for something that's possibly hentai, you're getting at least some hentai back.

* Note: I'm on the fence about including hentai and hentai-slanted shows in the tag listings. My approach for now is to include a thumbnail picture that isn't pornographic. Might mark these with a red band or something.

2) Most viewed items seems to make sense. People tend to view things that deserve to be viewed. A reality check of popular things like Sailor Moon, Inuyasha, and CCS confirms this. The series item counts are provided to give you a size estimation of how much "stuff" there is to see at that gallery.

3) What about having it automatically select stuff but then allow it to be overridden? Well, *this* is where you get a chance going off-topic if a member starts filling up the search results with counter-intuitive things. It might make sense if used as intended, but not significantly *more* sense than just automatic selection based on what's actually popular on your site. The payoff for programming this interface is negligible.

4) In the gallery update listing, where it's anything goes, you're stuck on the home page if you want a totally sanitized experience (i.e. hide thumbnails). There will be way (once the gallery editing tools get updated) to mark an item adult and perhaps those can be censored in the public update lists, but I can tell you that philosophically I'm not worried about it. Rubberslug is not the only source of boobs on the internet. My goal is simply to ensure that it will never be the best source, nothing more.

Re: the popular search listings:
A problem I noticed is, not all the cels are of the anime depicted by the icons.

In the Akira search, by page two you have matches with different anime. In this case, Countdown, a hentai with a sub section called ?Akira?, and Hikaru no Go?s character, ?Akira?.

Re: most viewed items as the small preview images:
I think I'll be stuck with the cels I added back in 2004 for a long time. For the reasons I stated in the thread titled "Question on Gallery by Popular Interest".

Haha, awesome. I am also of the opinion that people should realize RS is an art site, and that's going to have boobies. It's not a kid site. Good to know I'm not alone on this.

If you are bothered by your old cels being the thumbs you're "stuck" with, is it not possible to delete out and start a new page for those items? Would that not reset your stats?

It wouldn?t be an issue of the gallery owner being bothered by the displayed cels. It would be more of a problem of viewers becoming disinterested after continuously seeing the same cels ? which might also be a concern for the popular series listing after the initial novelty of the listing wears off.

Unlike the text search, which changes with each user update, promoting the idea of a user doing the same search many times to find out what?s new, the use of popular item listings in both gallery titles and advertising cel images is a much more stagnant and unchanging choice. I guess it could be changed by users deleting and reloading their popular cels. However, I don?t think anyone would intentionally choose to reload their older cels, because it would throw their gallery to the end of the show listing.
