Why Would...
Yes, it takes a bit before your gallery appears on the main page if you close your gallery, then update it, and reopen it.
I think it took 15 minutes before my gallery appeared on the main page.
I do understand your concerns about updating and being unable to view anything. It is a bit frustrating; but, when I added updated my private area today--it didn't trigger my gallery to be displayed immediately on the front page. [And, this was before I shut down my gallery for the update. :)] I like keeping things private----there are some things I am not ready to share either.
I think grouping cels for private viewing and public viewing together in an update would be nicer--but, not everybody does that. :)

What I find funny is that the things I have listed privately have high hit counts. I think I know most of the people who have access to my private items, but I guess word gets around.
I do whatever I want with my gallery because it's my paycheck that's burning for this hobby, not someone elses. So, I feel that gives me the right to do what I want with my collection. I feel other collectors have this exact same right, so I don't see what the big deal is.
I guess I just don't notice how frequently or infrequently people are on the main page. Is it really that important? I think the term "system abuse" is best applied to someone who's unnecessarily on welfare or stealing food stamps. Ya know, something serious.
I've read both threads and appreciate the arguments.
I don't like to see galleries represented on the main page that haven't updated artwork for everyone to view. I'm sure the curators of such Coming Soon sections [etc] feel the same way. It seems that half of all gallery updates are these 'hidden/protected' ones which don't help surfers find what is new to visit.
Instead of uploading the images to a private section of the webspace, wouldn't it be easier and quicker for people to save the images on their computers in a folder named "Coming Soon"?
Even if they are work/public computers, people could email the images to their home computer and sort it out later, or use private online image hosts for cataloguing.
Doing this saves the RS front page from being dominated by file dumpers.
After all, isn't the point of having an online gallery to allow the public to SEE the artwork you have?
On my harddisk I have a folder called "Bidding On_Wants" which currently has 3,200 cel images that I've won and have been outbid on. It's been useful because I name the file with its title and number and include the final cost. I use the 'Summary' section [by right-clicking the image] to add the seller's detials and the item specifics. It adds up to be a useful database.
By no means do I intend to persecute Sluggers who have such sections on their page, but maybe they haven't thought of such alternatives?
In regards to the 'coming soon' section, I generally wait until I have a few items that I've won to upload them up on RS. I hide the ones I want and display the ones I want to....so, in a lot of 4, I might display 1 and hide the other three.
I've seen some users make an annotation that the items are hidden or require a password. Honestly, I'm not frustrated by people who hide their new art...but, if it is a big problem, perhaps it should be required that some sort of annotation of it being 'hidden', etc. should be provided.
I would not catalogue those who have their update hidden as "File Dumpers".
Those who chose to password protect or hide their coming soon sections do have that right. Of course we all would prefer to see and drool over what someone has just added to their collections.
As I said earlier , if you visit a gallery shown on the front page that has the update hidden and it bothers you so much , please use some personal responcibility and do not bother to visit that same one the next time when you mouse over the gallery on the front page and it shows an update for "coming soon".
