Copying Sketches...What for???

Anyone else ever wonder why people buy copies of sketches. I always wondered why. I see a lot of people copying their collection and selling the copies on Yahoo Japan, Ebay etc. Why pay money for just copies? They will never be worth anything. And if just for personal collections, why?? have you seen the quality of the copies, broken lines, dark spots. I think a little weird...Any Ideas.....???

I have bought Copy-sketches, and have NEVER copied any of my cels/sketches...my answer to you is beacuse maybe the cels costs too much, or the anime of it is rare....maybe beacuse there is no way in heck that you could get that scene..Or maybe beacuse it looks pretty...i mean...it's like buying SETTEI..Why buy it if it's not original?

-Though the fans that do copy their collection and sell it off do it for one reason= CASH!

-And knowing that there is no way that I can find a sketch of Lacus, or any GS characters...I'd probably settle for a copy-sketches too (not for too much though) And not if it's on normal paper..
-The Wolf Rain's copy-sketches I did buy are very huge! A fan with a special printer had to print those up...

I think sometimes the buyer does not know they are getting photocopies. I've seen auctions on Mandarake for copy settei sets go over 100,000 yen...and I just can't believe that someone would knowingly pay that much money for a set of photocopies, no matter how nicely they are presented.

If however, people are willingly paying this for photocopies, please contact me. I'll make some and sell them to you! ;)

Hiya Matt,

Some copies are made buy the production studios for use by new animators or older ones that move on to newer productions in the studios as models for the toons so the same model is used by all.
This type of copy is considered production art and can be worth a good chunk of change if it's a rare scene or a copy is all thats left after the original has been destroyed for what ever reason.
These copies also are used to archive a "for use"copy of the scene model to keep the original from being messed up with alot of handling by the animators.
I have a bunch of these types of production copies in my gallery if you would like to see what I'm talking about. Here is a link to them.

As
the others here have said sometimes the only way to get a scene or a shot from a show you like is to buy a copy of it as only one is ever made and this maybe the only way you can get what you want.

Be real careful buying copys online, As most of these are illegal and brake copyrights of the production companys and you can go to jail or pay big fines just for buying or owning them even though you did not make them.
If the ad says you are buying a copy they made. Dont touch it!!!
If the ad says your buying the paper or just paying the shipping and handling and the copy is free you should be ok as this does not infringe on the copyrights of the production companys.
You will see this done in lots of ads for cels that come with a background copy for the cel, The copy most of the time is given for free and this does not brake copyrights of the production companys.

The best thing to do is to buy studio copies from the production company as these are made to be sold to the public.

I hope this helps some.

Well, be sure to understand that there are such things as original studio copies. Mandarake, for example, isn't the one copying them. On the other hand, there are the 30 bucks-a-pop, third generation xeroxes that you find on YJ, these are definitely people trying to make some quick money.

That said, there's no way I can understand paying 1000 dollars for copies (but yes, to answer the question, I'd say the people paying hundreds of dollars for them know what they're getting. On the other hand, I think the people who buy the cheaper sets are unaware that they are photocopies.)

Edit- Ah, Roy got it.
