Do cels eventually fade? Say no
I was told that after certain period of time cels eventually fade. I never wondered what kind of a time period we are talking about until now.
I know about line fading but can a whole cel actually fade? I have seen some pretty old cels but not really a faded one.
Is the fading inevitable even if the cel is kept in a dark acid-free folder?
Hmmmmmm?
If the cels are out of the light and in a acid free place they will not fade but some paints tend to get darker not lighter with time.
If you look at the pow wow cel I just listed it was made in the 50s and it is just as brite as the day it was made, The cel it's self may shrink a little but the stuff they use now is pretty stable.
The paints can brake down over time and flake off the cel but this is mostly from handling them to much.
The line fade is the toner falling off the front of the cel,It's made of powder and melted on the front of the cel,If the melting was done to fast or to thick it tends to flake off with time and handling. Handling being the main thing that makes it come off the gold colored line that is left is the burnt place that the toner was stuck to.
Make sure you use a backing board in each page of your folder so as not to flex the cels to much when you thumb thru them.
Don't store your drawings in the same place you store your cels as they are not acid free and can over time stain your cels yellow even if they are in the same box and not in your folder.
Good air flow will help your cels to last longer also, This keeps them from drying out also.
I hope this help some.

Cels and sketches can be kept in the same cel book as long as they don't touch right?
I would not even keep them in the same box as they tend to give off acidic gasses.
They are not as bad as newspaper but they are far from acid free it would just take longer to burn the cels.
Don't use cardboard boxes for storage or the same thing can happen I forgot to put that in the first post.
If you have any of the yellow type paper drawings they are very acidic and I would put them in there own storage place away from your other drawings and cels.
