Framing a cel - where to start

Hi,
I would like to know anything about the best way to frame a cel. I already know to use plastic/poly/acrylic and not real glass and acid free backing board but that's it.

Is there an on-line source that sells a cels "friendly" complete frame for normal sized cels (9" X 10.5") ?

I do not mean the high end museum class treatment but a basic level for cel protection.

Does using a comic book backing board sounds OK to be placed behind a cel in it's frame ?

What do you do with all the layers ? How do you prevent the front side of the cell to touch the display glass and from sticking to the backing board ?

Any info or FAQ referals will be appreciated.

Thanks !

Hello AG,

The cels that I have had framed were done at Aaron Brothers & Fast Frames.

I found it well worth the expense to have them framed using Museum glass which will protect the cel from UV rays but not distort the colors. Other glass for UV protection has tints or a coating on it.

I have the cels mounted between 2 acid free mats that "float" the cel away from the glass & the background so they don't touch either and hence do not stick.

You will still need to be careful as to where you display your cel due to the potential heat damage from direct sunlight or bright lights.

Hi,

As I live outside the US I am having trouble finding cel framing materials - the one framer I found that seems a pro asks for a huge ammount of money to frame it with UV glass and acid free materials.

I found a pro who is willing to help me but does not have any access to UV protected glass or acrylic.

I have failed to find any on-line store that can supply me such materia for the low quantity I need - they all seem to be wholessale.

Can you recommend a good on-line source that can provide framing supplies for an individual like myself ?
Maybe a framer in NYC as I have a relative there.

Thanks

Hello AG,

One I found that is on-line as well as having a NY store is www.dickblick.com I have never done business with them but they may be worth a try.

Hi Again,

I have decided to go with the 2 Inner Matte system to have the cel away from the glazing.

My cel is oainted along the right and bottom edges of the cellulite - almost up to the border of the cel with less than 1/8" margin.

So, should I only hide that small margin with the inner matte and risk not having enough matte support for the cel edges or should I take 1/2" of the cel and "lose" the painted are there for sake of having more matte overlap with the cel edge so it will give it better support ?

I hope you understand my question
