Hello E.

With out being able to translate the Gainax page these appear to be a lithographs.
I have seen the one of Rei and Asuka in christmas outfits on a special edition book box that included a small figure of them in that costume.
I do have some limited editon lithographs in my collection but none from eva.

Debate:

Being done via digital printing or as one site compared it to computer generated lithography it really to me depends on what is being printed as well as the amount produced. Most top end litho's are limited to 300 or less,it also depends if they are signed and numbered. Those I have comic book related as well as the two Ai Yori Aoshi lithos on my gallery are #100 or less.If these are high tech "posters" that just have a cetificate of authenticity or larger productions they may fall into the cell-u-club or serial cel category they are not worth their asking price. But as with most items including cels it does depend on the indivdual. Some may buy these just for the Gainax name.

No, I suppose those are not lithographs. They try to describe them on GAINAX as "high-tech-silk-block-prints".. but what they are referring to is the glicee process. Although the process is similar in that they are "fine art prints", those are glicee's..

I see a lot of this glicee's art coming out especially with USA comic book super hero characters.

Here is an excellent example:

I have never seen any in Japan or with Japanese anime until these Gainax ones "live" though. Glicee's in general are being done both on canvas and paper.

Whether it is just an over-hyped ink-jet printing process is the rage I guess,

I
think the prcess to make a lithograph is much more of a creative process, but both do have their "reproductive" qualities. I think that lithographs will vary. This glicee process is done on disk. I guess the 21st century and its digital/technological world of tools, have crept past the creative hand of the man to some degree. I wonder if we will "buy into it", quite literally. When very famous artists and studios begin to produce computer generated or supported artworks, and put 4 figure prices on them, for limited editions of 300?!, it makes me frown. But, at the same time I get curious and want to see one or two, at least before I make a definitive judgement that they are either great or the biggest scam and rip-off since this side of (the moon) anime has begun. I am always on the verge of feeling like the proverbial "sucker born every minute" as it is with collecting cels! =)

The French term "Gicl?e", literally meaning "spray of ink," is used to describe these prints. Four precision nozzles spray up to a million microscopic droplets per second on to fine art paper. Then, each piece of paper is individually hand-mounted. Displaying a full color spectrum, the prints are lush and velvety, capturing the subtle nuances of the original artwork.

-From an animation website. Disney makes quite a few of them, they really turn out very vibrant.

Hi JWR,

Yes, your litho's are definitely anime fine art. They are very beautiful pieces as well.

I have an open mind on this topic actually; I just wondered if anyone had any glicee art. I did a search here without any results.

I have a few lithographs of my own, as well as reproductions, hankens, and rilezu cels, on my site, so I am not a "production cel" do or die collector. I do like the human touch though.

Gainax:

The prices seem to be "extraordinary" as I peer at what they have made as far as selection of motifs and set prices. I am a novice regarding this medium so I could be just a cheapsake.. I dunno. I have spent that much on cels though =)

I see most newer glicee's priced like this though (as in the example in the prior post). Gainax pieces are also twice as much as their prior "hand-painted" Evangelion cel reproductions. The editon size was also much smaller. So, it has me scratching my head about the actual creative process involved.

Would you invest in one? =)
