the poll of non-moving pictures

I suppose the "no" choice could have been expanded because there's a lot of reasons why someone might not like this practice. I personally think it's okay and quite acceptable especially when the background matches the mood/design of the original. Your local history museums do this all the time -- they put authentic historical pieces arranged in the correct context with the help of non-historical props.

What do you think?

Hey if it looks good go with it.

Beside its so hard to get the original matching background (plus i'm too tight to get a matching copy painted, to lazy to piece one together from screencaps and I have all the artistic talent of a well aimed half brick so painting one myself is out of the question)that its really not gonna happen.
I think I have 3 cels with matching background and two of them aren't even displayed in my gallery.

Hell if it wasn't for everyone posting backgrounds in the background gallery (for which I am eternally grateful to everyone for) all my cels would probably have a rather samey feel to them.

I don't see any problem with it, as long as its marked that it isn't the original. Cels just tend to look better with a background. I do think it is important to say whether the background matches or not, as I think collecting backgrounds is an important part of cel collecting, and I have been known to buy cels specifically for the background.

I
tend not to pair cels with unmatching backgrounds myself tho. In my own gallery, if there is a background at least 95% of the time it is the original matching one. Most of the remainder are cels that came with original but unmatching backgrounds when I bought them and I left it that way. The only time I add a fake background is when the cel has light-colored small painted details that would otherwise get lost on a white background (like sakura petals) or is so often pictured with a particular background color that not having it would look strange.

Or it might be that I'm lazy. Not sure.

jn, I have no idea, but "snarkiest" to me is that you won't send them.. I guess that I'll never know (heh, heh)..

Little bit of "background" humor there...

Don't worry if you don't get it.

On topic---

Sure why not have any background you please. There are some backgrounds that give life to an other wise dull cel,and indeed conversely you can show off a great background by adding a cel to it. People use software programs to "spiffy-up" their cels anyway with Photoshop and others, as well as, having them framed and matted in the real world.. I personally do not see problem in putting some wrapping around your eye candy. I take the >It is your cel, do as you please< approach. A lot of production backgrounds were copies anyway even during production. There were not as many backgrounds as cels at all. Some people think that each cel had its own background, they didn't. Backgrounds were used over and over again with different cels, and many were color copied as well.

For me, it is with those cut-out and paired down cels and backgrounds that irk me for some reason. Trimmed cels are a no-no.. and backgrounds too if it can be helped,, but that is my pet-peeve.

I don't get it. Do you mean when the cel and/or background have been physically cropped - like when backgrounds are cut down to cel size - or do you mean when the SCAN is cropped to remove empty space or the rough edges of the paint?
