The Effects of Your Cel Collecting

Nope b/c I do not share or inform my parents of friends about them. It is none of their business. I collect for my own entertainment and amusement, not for people to gawk and go ooohh and ahh. Cel collecting to me is not a popularity contest if that was the case we'd ALL LOSE b/c the closet and blackhole collectors have more highend cels and started decades earlier than anyone on RS. It also doesn't hurt that those same collectors happen to be very rich. Something I highly doubt any of us.

Also since I paid for the cels, gengas, hankens, dougas etc., so it is only fitting I and I alone dictate how they are used. Also, I do not spend ridiculous amounts on cels, I only use disposable income and avoid as much as possible, getting into idiotic bidding wars... the person who wins is the seller and at your expense.

Im 20 and I dont get to much grief about collecting. My parents dont have a clue how much I spend, and if they did I wouldn't be here today. My friends (that know/care) dont really know how much I spend thats my business not theres. The person I get the most grief and oddly the most support is my fiance. She hates anime with a passion (except trigun), but she helps me pick out cels. Confused? Well so am I. I think her big beef is that I have spent almost as much money on cels as her engagment ring. She also worries about money down the road, I tell her "Dont worry dear its going to be a long engagment". I get the evil eye alot.

Heh, I think the best policy is to shut up and just collect them which will avoid conflict. I know it's different when you have other financial commitments and families to think about but you only live once so it's best to indulge in what you enjoy.

I guess it's important to live within your means but how many times will you see that rare cel? What are credit cards for anyway? ^__^

Yeah, I keep schtum when it comes to my collection but when I mention it to some friends thay can't believe I spend so much time and effort in getting the art I do. Like many of you guys said, when you compare it to hobby of theirs they tend to understand. One friend repays GB?400 a month on his new car whereas I just buy artwork, it's all swings and roundabouts.

I get told off quite a bit by the better half O_o
But I am honest so he is gratful about that. The main problem is that I almost always buy a cel when there is a bill to be paid, just bad timing. I don't get lectured so much about the choice in hobby because he has a equally obbsessive hobby. It is just the amounts we spend can differ.

Ahh well. I handle it by being honest, I can not hide my credit card bill nor any other money that goes out. Besides it would not be fair to hide in secret. Damn morals!!

Why do we have to pick the hobby that has people saying why all the time?

It's not just this hobby. Every hobby has someone saying "why?" as well. Cel collecting isn't my only expensive hobby. I also am into sword/knives collecting (and not the show-off kind, the actual authentic weapons that can be used, which makes it helluva expensive) and also Star Wars Legos. Can you believe my next project will be that $300 retail Death Star II?

So I get people (some friends, some who just ask what I collect) who ask why I spend my money on Legos, or swords, or cels. I shrug and say "why not?" I enjoy it and that's all that matters in a hobby. You don't always have to understand it (like I don't understand people's fascination for comics), but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. Don't worry what others think...it's your money, your life. :) Enjoy it! :D
