policy on cel thievery

Well, art is abstact. Every painting can be copied or duplicated. It is not hard for someone with a talent to repaint the Mono Lisa for that matter or anything else. Cel art, anyone can do it, but not many can become "productions". Do you think fancels can appear on movies or tv? Do you think that a famous world renown piece of "acetate" is comparable to a fan cel piece of acetate for a "collector"? I have a wonderful fancel, probably a good as or better than 90% of my cels. I like it just as much. So for "me" it is as valuble as any other cel that I have,,market wise..NOT.
Think about it. Not that someone can or cannot do it. But who that owns a piece of Miyazaki's "Mononoke Hime" or a piece of Disney's "Fantasia" or "real" production art may find your comparsion startling naive. "Mass production, assembly line art", hmmm, IMO you have a good point there. I agree, to some extent, but if there were less for the high demand, what would the prices be then? How high would it go? Anime is loved "fanatically" here in Japan. Manga, comics, etc.! is a craze from toddler to adult. Anime goods, toys, towels, plush dolls, figures, it is all big selling "production anime goods". The original drawings, hankens, and then production cel art is on the top of the heap! Those anime conventions are getting bigger and bigger every year. I would not dare post a sign up declaring, "Hey fools, why you all buying this trash" It's like trying to sell health food at a baseball game.

Just saying production cels are nothing is not looking at anime at all. Anime "is" production cels, genga's, etc. originally created by very "famous" manga artists. Or it was, now computers have squeezed in..the future is anyone's guess.

Thanks for the information. I am looking forward to disagreeing with you "next year" ^-^

When you say that cels are just "acetate for overhead projectors with paint on them" degrades cels. At least to me. I feel that calling cels in general that makes them seem worthless even though they are not. Im an artist so i can respect and understand how hard it is to do these images. I know the difficulty and expertise in them and that alone is such a wonderful thing to me. To not only be a fan of the series of the cel i bought but to respect the art as an artist is just an incredible feeling. I think there is a big difference though in production cels and fancels. Production cels are used in animating so they are alot less detailed than a regular image (in most cases at least) and fancels are just for that image so they are filled with incredible detail. I think fancels are treated more like paintings then actually cels. I mean i know they are acrylics on acetate and all but they are made in the same sense as a painting or drawing. To show off that image. Production cels were just a part of that anime, cartoon, show, etc. When it comes to animes such as dragonball/z/gt, its more like a trading card game. Find the rarest of the bunch or the most sought after most powerful figure or the rarest moment in the whole series. At least to me it is. Although if im forking over 100+ bucks for them they damn better be special to me and look good.

Thats my 2 cents, i hope you enjoyed your stay and come back again!! ;)

peace out,

I just buy cels, scan 'em, and put them in my gallery. If I see a cel I like that's not for sale, I save the picture and look at it on my desktop. O_o;.......You people scare me sometimes....~Kaije

Maybe ask the 2 disputors to provide a scan of sorts of the cel only, make it so that it is nothing that the image thief could easily re-scan.

Like maybe scan the cel in question intertwined with other cels the owner has.

Or.

Demand a high-res scan, like 2000 dpi of
a small section of the cel.

A scan this high in quality will bring out
flaws in the cel that simply stealing a scan
will not show.
