the dragonball effect

I think Dragonball is more good than it is bad for anime. There is always going to be people out there ruining things for others, especially when the popularity grows. I'm really glad that it helps others become familiar with anime, hopefully not into collecting cels though ^^;. Dragonball wasn't my first anime either but it was the one that got me hooked on cel collecting ;p

It seems like when a lot of anime/manga get animated they tend to drag it out a bit or use techniques that have become really trite. I try to give most shows a chance and have yet to completely give up on any that I've started watching. I know a lot have their downfalls but I can overlook most of them.

I agree, Dragonball doesn't have much of a plot other than who the next villain is and the training to fight them. I think it kind of got out of hand, you can tell they were trying to drag out the series as long as they could.

I am more of a sucker for great stories and if the animation is just as great then I'm in trouble *l*

Maybe Dragonball was good for the anime business overall. It was a nice start for the USA anime cable market. If you see all the best stuff first.. then you get bored real fast =)

Gamers, manga readers, and fansubbers are way a head of the pact, but that is like "cheating" ;-)

So, DBZ it is not the worst, and not the best of anime--- of course not. And remember, it is a kids show at heart afterall, just like Card Captor Sakura, Pokemon, and others nothing more and nothing less IMO. It is violent though and action packed.. and brings out the worst in some of its loyal following.

In Japan, kids would come home and once a week one of the shows, out of dozens, to select from would be DB, or DBZ. Gundam series has had a lot more fans.. But, Dragonball for better or worse is still better than most "cartoons" in the USA, IMO. When you have so much to choose from, it is easy to make judgements. But if you look at DB vs. USA cartoons alone, it stands up pretty well I would imagine.

I do have a bit of a 'rant' that kinda fits along the lines of this thred. Wed. was the last day of my vacation and I was just looking for a quiet day around the house. I was watching tv and Toonamie came on the Cartoon Network (CN). I thought it might be fun to check out what was on. First was Dragonball then 2 ep. of DBZ and finally and ep. of DBGT. I did not watch the whole program but I did flip back to check from time to time. What a waist of programing, CN has put on some good shows in the past but 2 hours of dragonball was to much. I am not a real big DB fan but; WOW! When you have nothing better to put on than basicly the same program 4 times in 2 hrs. some thing is wrong. At one point CN had a good mix ie, 4 differn't programs not all DB which to me can get old quick. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest I feel better now. I didn't mean to balst DB but somthing had to be said.

I think DBZ gives anime a bad rep. Dragonball wasn't too bad, but I can't stand DBZ. The story is bad, and the animation looks like it was done by a 6 year old. It doesn't bother me at all that people watch it or like it, but it does bother me when people claim to be an anime expert when all they talk about it how much butt Goku can kick. It also bothers me when people find out I'm an anime fan and the first thing out of their mouth is "Oh, those Japanese cartoons, like Dragon Ball Z, right?"

I don't think it's a matter of 'having nothing better' to put on rather than the ratings are probably still pretty high for the show. It doesn't seem to have lost its popularity. That kind of reminds me of InuYasha, they stopped running it and got a lot of upset viewers, I believe that the next line up for adult swim has two episodes of InuYasha every night (which is fine by me ^^).
