Interesting topic, I thought I’d join in. Since I’ve been collecting cels for about 10 years my advice to new collectors would be to:
- not expect a profit out of a cel. Purchase cels that would make you happy and that you really, really want to have. Also a collection doesn’t need to be big, have a few selected items as opposed to a lot of cels that later you don’t know what you’re going to do with.
- don’t offend other collectors with terribly low offers for cels. Do your research before making an offer. Somehow the saying “Go big or go home” rings very true here.
- understand the difference between bank cels, key cels in general understand what makes a certain cel more valuable than another. I find that’s important when it comes to buying especially when you’re new at the hobby. There are a lot of cels out there and some are way overpriced. In general understand what you’re buying.
- definitely talk to other people in the hobby. There’s always something to learn about techniques, colors, backgrounds that are part of the animation process. I always try to give a lot of details in my cel descriptions, especially when I find something unusual, compelling about a cel.
Rubberslug is an amazing place for people to exchange knowledge. It’s also this century’s online museum, which one can enjoy from anywhere in the world. I just hope that more people would join. A lot of cels are into private collections and it would be great if we all got the change to enjoy their beauty.
