I think the anime "Martian Successor Nadesico" combined the two. The only difference is no plad skirts. ^_^

I once wrote a fanfic in which engineers paid by Daidouji Toy Works built a fully-operational penguin mecha. Tomoyo piloted it to excellent effect in an epic battle between Sakura and evil reanimated mummies controlled by Eli Moon and Madison Taylor.

Hasn't been picked up yet by CLAMP or Madhouse, though.
