galleries by interest

The redesign is bringing a new default sorting for galleries. We'll keep alphabetical as a backup, but it's not useful for most normal people.

The new idea is to sort galleries into what they collect. Here is the current list.

My goals are to include 1) the ~30-40 most popular things on RS, 2) a good helping of Western shows that will help expand our focus, and 3) things that are iconic and need more exposure, even if art for those interests is rare.

Let me know what isn't on this list and needs to be.

I'd suggest including some broader categories if technically feasible (long lists of show titles behind the scenes and nominations?), which would help people discover lateral interests or collect isolated series together

"Golden Age", to pull in everyone with pre-1970 (or thereabouts) western material. (Keep in mind there are many non-Golden Age Disney productions, and that those collections do not properly go with Golden Age).

A "Classic Anime" category to pull all pre-'80s anime together

I'm sure others could suggest other sensible larger categories; studios, genres (giant robots, hentai, incredibly boring shows about schoolgirl politics, etc.)

I was considering this. The problem is exactly as you say though... how complicated does this search get?

Right now, my "Disney" tag looks for Disney, Lion King, Aladdin, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and a few other things, just to try this theory out.

I wanted to do a Miyazaki one at the very least, since his movies are typically similar in art style and often thematic content as well.

Super ideal: user-created "collections" based on a few key words that could be nominated and browsed on, as well as a thumbnail picture.

Somewhat ideal: manually-created by mods, version of the above

Today: Other than the disney thing, titles of shows or movies.

The gallery browser thing is actually going pretty quick. If I can get the market and *maybe* the forums up this week, then that might be enough for a community preview.

Galleries grouped by series?
Maybe we're not seeing the big picture (and we likely aren't), but to us this seems kind of strange. Especially when you consider the limited number of series that would be featured.
What would happen to galleries that don't have anything from these selected series? Would they even be accessible under the new galleries listing?
We're assuming that the search function would still work as it does now, but doesn't this new grouping concept sort of alienate a large number of shows?
Additionally, while a show like Cardcaptor Sakura may be a lot more popular than, say, Dirty Pair Flash, we personally would rather that people saw us as DPF collectors instead of as CCS collectors. Either way, you should probably add Mezzo Forte to your list of shows, along with La Blue Girl. Like Words Worth, these shows can be seen as influential hentai anime. Maybe you could add Dirty Pair to the list, too? :)
