Anime beta down?

Just an update. Magician has gotten a new host for us and is waiting for the ok to upload beta again. We'll disable Cloud for the time being. Once beta is up again Magician will try to start working on updates. It'll take time and probably be a very slow process since he's so busy right now. But to sum it up we should have things up and running fairly quickly once he gets the thumbs up from the host.

I have a new host set up and am uploading the DB now. I'll redirect the URL shortly which will take a day or 2 to propagate around the world. I'll post the temporary URL here once the site is up. Bluehost has been a decent host, but their support team is not very friendly, or helpful, and I don't have much faith in their environment. Remember the user table crash last spring? Even now, their server status page shows the CPU red and that's with beta and gold-knight.com disabled. The new host has a support staff that gets very high marks from their customers.

I am going to take steps to prevent this from happening again. First, the core PHP script engine will be upgraded to v5.x. This may cause some bugs as the 2.x phpBB forum package wasn't written to run on it, but it is more efficient than 4.x so that should take some of the heat off the server. I'm going to disable Cloud for the short term while I look to see if anything can be done to his existing engine to make it more efficient. Between those 2 steps, the new host shouldn't grumble.

Longer term, I'm going to build a test beta and upgrade it to the new phpBB 3.x release. This WILL break things and some of the features I've added like the buddy list aren't available as addons. I don't know what all won't work, but it is a major upgrade path which is why I haven't done it yet. The good news is someone has written a new AI engine for this release. I will try to import Cloud's "brain" into this new engine and see if he still functions. I hope so.
