what does copyright animation cel mean?

What's the original Japanese? Could you copy and paste at least part of the description?

If the auction says 版権セル画 then it is referring to a hanken cel. A lot of the Japanese terms we use don't translate very smoothly, so . . . we use the original Japanese.

And . . . using Rinkya's automatic translator, the phrase 版権セル画 gets translated to "copyright animation cel." So, I'm pretty sure what you're looking at is a hanken. ^_^

Yea, I thought it might be hanken after I posted; but, it DOES look questionable to me as well. Luna, I think you do know what I'm talking about too. Not to worry, I thought it looked all wrong... just couldn't understand what the seller was saying! ~_^

The hanken in question was used on the box of the Sailormoon Excellent Team Sailor Saturn doll. The doll was released during the SuperS season, or 1995.

Here's a little scan of the doll that I found on E-bay. You'll notice that the hanken is used in the picture on the far right.

Now, for the question regarding the different color of Saturn's fuku. Seems like the illustrious people at Bandai wanted the images to match the box color. Bandai is rather notorious with asking for changes to pre-existing hanken; I own one that was used on the Jumbo Carddass card, but the mouth was slightly changed for the final version used on the card. Saturn's fuku color was changed to match the box color. All three hankens used on the box feature this same effect.

Both of the hankens used on the sides of the box appear to be a second version of pre-existing hankens. This does not mean that they are a fancel or rilezu, but the images served two different purposes. The first versions of these cels were used in the Sailormoon Carddass sets(the Saturn pose in question was used in the Jumbo Carddass set - http://www.geocities.com/chibicutiebunny/jumbocarddass2.html). There are some minor discrepencies inbetween the two versions(the biggest being color), but other than that, they are the same. I would imagine that the hankens used for the Outer Senshi's S doll boxes(no SuperS version of the Outer Senshi were ever produced by Bandai)follow a similiar pattern, as the artwork was repeatedly used for card sets as well.

Now...I'm not quite sure why, in this case, the lines were made by xerox instead of hand-inked. My guess would be is that the original douga was still in studio posession at the time, and the xerox lines were produced from that copy. SuperS was the pinnacle of Sailormoon-related merchandise production, so, quick turn-arounds were always important. However, judging from the third scan included on the auction, there's kanjii written on the top. The majority of Sailormoon hanken that I own all have this feature either on the cel or on the rice paper that the cel is attached to. I would also imagine that there might be a star in the upper right hand corner of the cel dennoting its hanken status as well, but I could not see it in the scans.

Maybe the lucky owner can fill us in there...

wow, that's awesome. i wouldn't have guessed that either mostly because i collected the manga, dairies and stencil pad when i was much younger. who knows? maybe the lucky owner will. :)
