In case of FIRE.
Well, my main problem is losing something irreplaceable, not really the actual value of the items. (although that would hurt too!) They're worth a lot more to me then their monetary value, simply as i love the film so much.So insurance there really isn't an option.
I guess just including them in a fire plan is the best idea. I know what you mean about just being acetate, and there are more important things to save in such an incident. ie; family members. But still. When something is irreplaceable it makes you quite a bit more protective over them. Well I know I am.
Its not like Otomo has TVtv series or sequel planned! :D
I'm still pretty new to cel collecting, only about two years in really. So I dunno, maybe this over protectiveness will wear off eventually >_<
I cannot speak for you, but for myself over the years I learned to accept what I can and cannot change when it comes to this hobby. I rather insure the monetary value for the cels instead of the emotional value, b/c in the end while the cels cannot be replaced per se, at least you didn't lose everything. IMO that IS what matters and what proper fire insurance protects owners against.
The fireproof case idea would have to be large enough to fit the cels without damaging them. Also, the case would need to be able to withstand the heat that is associated with fires. A cheap firesafe won't last more than 15 minutes at best, so in all honestly, that idea won't work. And it is questionable whether it is worthwhile to invest in a expensive fireproof safe primarily for cels.
Also, try not to get too attached to your cels, they are degrading with every second. Consider reading this too:

"they are degrading with every second"
The way I look at that is, the cels i collect are almost 20 years old. Most of the degrading is extremely minimal. Line fade is probably the worst feature in any of them. Any that are damaged beyond that, are due to bad care on some collectors behalf.
Unless the degrading accelerates, and there's the same ratio with damage/time for the next 20 years, they'll look practically the same. By then they'll be 40 years old. I'll be 42. I cant say it's up there on my list of worries :D
Hurricane damage? :O nothing like that ever over here, thankfully!
I wouldn't jinx yourself with that comment about the degrading being minimual. An increase in heat or cold can easily adversely affect your cels. Increased pressure from other items pressing against can also adversely affect the cels. I am not trying to focus only on the potential hazards, but in this hobby it pays dividends to be prudent and plan accordingly.
I can relate almost all of the cels I actively collect are 20 years old, but just b/c they currently are in good condition, I do not take it for granted and do my utmost to ensure their positive condition remains.
This is a very interesting thread! I did have one question Mahoro, how do you go about insuring your cels? Do you need proof of their value? Such as receipts of their purchase? If so then I'm out of luck if I decide to do this since I almost always throw out the receipts if my cels come with them, lol.
