ATTENTION ALL RS MEMBERS!! NO SALE BLOGS

Excellent ideas Ms. Poe! I like the idea about making sure people read something before signing up and having them active action buttons or checkboxes. I am not sure how easy or hard it is to create this but in time, I am sure Jason will find a way. In the meantime, I wonder how we can effectively address this concern with existing members too. Like yourself, I too do not read the rotating information and news section. But I imagine some people might and as such it might be good to just post critical updates there -with links to the forum threads- for all to potentially read.

Lastly, it is good to see you wandering the RS halls. ^_^

I thought the rules were shown when you sign up? I honestly don't recall. But if not, then they definitely should be. A checkbox would be great too but that only helps new members or people who sign up from this point on. What about existing sluggers? There's no perfect solution, but perhaps combining a few suggestions could tackle the problem. Even with the efforts of the mods as it is, there's still going to be violations. Nothing's going to be completely fool proof unfortunately. I'm just sick of that old news on the front page.

It's been awhile since I signed up so I don't know for certain, but I recall some agreement checks, but I do not recall if there is anything else interactive. I.e. you have to type out a specific rule or something in an entry box like some online applications require. Still I imagine there are bound to be new users who simply do not make the effort to read the terms. Though for existing users I hope some of them caught the recent announcement blasts, but it is hard to tell. *shrug* Looking at the news section now, I totally understand what you mean about the "old news".

I know when I sign up to a new website, board or register a product, I don't read the licensing agreements or rules. I just don't. I'm sure some people are like me and overlook that stuff. There's also no way of forcing people to read the rules or proving that they actually read them. Clicking "I accept these terms" and disregarding the text is fairly simple.

That's why as others mentioned it might be helpful to have interactive buttons AND boxes where the new user has to type in specific rules that can only be located by reading the terms.

These interactive type of documents be it webbased or otherwise are partly being brought about due to upcoming Court changes to the eDiscovery rules in December this year. One of the changes effects how people respond to document retention notices. Some firms and larger companies are implementing changes as such as the ones I mentioned above. Even though many people do not read the terms, legally people do not have a leg to stand on if anything should occur.
