Yahoo Japan Proper Translation Help

Hello fellow Rubbersluggians. I've run into this Macross cel auction on Yahoo! Japan for a great shot of Hikaru & Misa, but the translator on Rinkya says it is a "duplicate animation cel" when translated from Japanese. Can someone out there correctly translate the text from the auction to let me know if it's an original cel or a copy?

Yeah, I saw that one too. It went up late last night. I wrote Anime Dept. and they said that it was a copy, otherwise I would be bidding on it ^_^ it is a very nice shot.

Obviously I have been looking at this cel as well. It is definately NOT in the anime anywhere. This is not to say that it isn't OP as it may have been produced by the studio but the scene was shortened in the final product. If you watch the related scene, the sun is comming up and bright highlights start to move across Rick and Lisa's face from left to right. The first cel in the sequence has darker tones than the YJ cel and only start to lighten and match the coloring of the YJ cel as the highlights progress. This cut ends and a shot of the SDF-1 appears before the highlights make it all the way across their faces (as they appear to have done in the YJ cel). The cel on YJ looks to me, because of the coloring and the location of the highlights, to be from the sequence if it had continued until the highlights had moved all the way across.

So is this cel OP from that sequence but just left on the cutting room floor? I could be wrong but I don't see any kind of cel number on this one. Also some of the line work is wrong from what can be scene in the anime. Most notably the hair in front of Lisa's exposed ear is much shorter than in the final cut. Both of the little chin dimples are the wrong shape. Black lines within Lisa's curls are almost non-existant in this cel while they are very dark in the final cut. The highlights in their eyes are wrong. Also the line work around Rick's eyes is different as is the line hash marks on his collar. In the animated shot, all of these things are identical from cel to cel and just the coloring of the highlights change as the sunlight falls on their faces.

This "cel" is also used on the title page of an official Japanese Macross artbook. In the artbook, the details I have mentioned above are different yet again. The color and shading is the same so I assume the "cel" in the artbook is from the same part in the sequence when the sun highlights have moved entirely across their faces (if my hypothesis is correct).

So I guess my point is that the image seen in the anime, the picture in the artbook and this cel are identical except for some minor line details and perhaps the tone of the shading. So is the YJ cel the real deal? I don't know. I am still fighting with it myself. It was certainly not used in the final filming but I don't know if we can rule it out as not being studio produced (the picture in the artbook is not in the anime either but the fact that it is in an official book makes me think that it is studio work). So I say bid on it if you like it (I probably will) but don't go nuts for it as it's authenticity cannot be established without doubt.

Wow Mokman you sure gave a detailed analysis on the cel. That sequence showing Misa & Hikaru is me dream cel and I was hoping this was a cel from it but couldn't figure if it was a fan cel or something else.

Yeah, I am not sure myself. GB told me last night on the chat that he got some info from a friend of a friend of a friend who knows the seller (or something like that, he wouldn't be specific) that the seller claims that the cel is a reproduction. So bid accordingly. Despite this I wouldn't be surprised at all if the bidding gets into the $300 range, but that is just my opinion.
