Collection size and how did you start?
Hello there
It all seem so harmless when you start buying cels, one here one there...that was like 270 cels ago...and still today one here and one there coming(lol).
Mostly what I have collected all through these years have been Dragonball series cels and it all started by pure chance. One day I was looking around on Ebay for some prints and other comic book art, so I stumbled into what would drive me away from comic book collecting and into this attraction that I do have with cels. That was 5 years ago, I managed to get rid of most of my initial collection which had growned to about 160 cels leaving me with about 40 cels. Well, I got caught in it again and today my collection is bigger than before and it seems that it is not stopping.
The moment I bought my first cel I was hooked, went on a pretty good shopping spree for a couple of years. Took a break for a year and half or so and like 2 years ago got started again. Pretty much since I opened my gallery here at RS is when I got back in the collecting game again.
I guess that you can say that I am a born again cel collector....the funny thing about it is that as I look back to what I have had and do have now I think there are not enough cels out there yet that can complete my collection. I am happy with what I have, but I always look for something I would like to add to my collection.

Last time I pulled my box out from under my bed and brushed the cobwebs away, I had around 50 pieces of artwork, sketches, and cels. I started sometime last year, when I found an IY cel on eBay and wondered what the heck a cel was. Well, now I'm more cultured in the ways of cel collecting so the journey continues...
I just stumbled across this thread, and it got me to wondering exactly how many things I do have in my collection. It's funny how you can lose count after a while ... or, perhaps, that's my brain's way of not dwelling on how much money I've spent! >_<
Anyhow, I was shocked to realize I have 309 items posted in my RS gallery. This includes cels, sketches from CG shows, rilezus, and repros. And, actually, the total number is probably quite a bit larger, as a lot of the sketch sets have more sheets in them than the one or two I post here on RS.
The really funny thing about how I got started is that it was all my husband's doing. He is not a big anime fan or anything like that, but a few years ago, he purchased a Kenshin cel for me -- as a surprise anniversary gift. I liked it so much that I added a cel of Mikagami (from Flame of Recca) a month or so later. But, those were my only two cels for a long time ... probably around two years or so. I didn't really start seriously "collecting" until about a year & a half ago. And, my wallet has never been the same.
My wallet!!! IT BLEEDS!!! T_T
Well, how I got started in cel collecting is actually posted in a different forum thread, but I should be able to answer your second question about my current collection. At present...*big sweatdrop*...I have about ~280 items posted on Rubberslug. I have about ~100 cels, ~100 sketches, ~25 freebies, ~15 backgrounds, and ~25 tradeable cels not currently scanned or displayed. Ouch! I didn't realize that I had that many. When they are all nicely put away in their cel books, the number looks so much smaller. *sigh*

well i started collecting anime in 84', when my little brother bought a synoposis guide of baycon 84' at uc berkeley. mostly artbooks, pencil boards and posters was what i got from such places like book nippon mail order club and nikaku animart. anyone remembers buying the macross dyrl vhs tape for 150 dollars? both my cousin and my younger brother did. a strange memory now.
saw my first cel at animecon 91' at the anime-wink table in san jose and thought whooah that's expensive and continue on my way. wasn't until macross II premired at the con did i get my first cel.
then i just bought 3-6 cels per con until the latter part of 2004 when i discover yj auctions.
total cels-60
