The rating feature

The rating feature…

You know I’ve been thinking about it ever since a friend of mine who helped me build this site kept looking at the “ratings”. I think she was more worried about the ratings going up or down instead of me. To be quite honest I do like the ratings because it tells me in a quick way whether my gallery is worthwhile to visit by others or not. Although now that I think about it, it shouldn’t really matter because the cels that I get are beautiful judging from my own eyes only where factors include money, availability and preference, someone else may love them and someone else will not. I put them online because I love to share them with people who may like them and get some joy out of just seeing cels of characters/events we both happen to like. Also they're in a gallery because it's easier for me to get access to them, than pulling them out of my dark closet! So I guess now that I really think about it I may have to turn the rating feature off because I’m just here to share images of those I happen to snag and fangirl about them. I would not want to worry about ratings going down and visitors not ecstatic about what they see because we all like different things. One of my most favorite anime and the most cels I have of at the moment, Daimos, I don’t think people know about it. LOL… Although ratings may encourage the collecting, I think it may also encourage collecting for the sake of getting “good grades”. But that is just my opinion and probably doesn’t hold true in every case. I do rate galleries that have the feature on them but I try not to rate them based on whether they have my favorites in them, although I’m sure I’ve fallen into that probably a few times. I guess I shall have to ask my friend though before I turn this rating off because well she likes to look at it and remind me. LOL… Well fellow collectors… What is your opinion on the subject? I’d love to hear from you who’s been at this longer than I have.

I look at the rating feature as an amusing distraction, but certainly nothing scientific or serious. We ultimately collect cels for ourselves, for our own enjoyment and pleasure. But we post them online for others. So receiving some sort of feedback, such as ratings, can be helpful. Can be. Not always. So, when looking at them, just take it with a grain of salt. There will be some honest folks and some dishonest folks. Don''t take it seriously, present your gallery and collection however you wish. This is your hobby.

Yep I quite agree. :)
It''s fun to look at but I don''t take it seriously. Basically it all comes down to I collect what I can and what I like. I should probably talk to her though as she might open a cel gallery on her own and if she worries about my rating then I''m thinking she''ll worry a lot about her own when it opens. ^__^***

Ratings are well ratings...in a lot of cases it really doens''t matter the quality of cels you have or what your gallery layout is or what you collect, it''s about how many people who are voting are your friends. So it can be kind of interesting to see how your votes are going but, on the whole it''s nothing to really concern yourself with. No one else really should concern themselves either. I echo what everyone else has to say it''s your collection and what makes you happy. We''re all just lucky enough to get a peek at it. ^_^

LOL, forget ratings...if I went based on hits alone, I''d have packed up shack and gone home a long time ago. My gallery is over a year older than yours and I have over 200 less hits (1597 as of this post).

I have no interest in ratings...if they want to leave commentary, I''d rather the "Send Feedback" form was used. Numbers are meaningless. I put my gallery online mostly for my own benefit, as well as for the few people who are interested in the items I collect. The Rubberslug gallery is the easiest way to keep track of my collection, and I find that spending the time to scan and describe the various pieces of art gives me a greater appreciation of them.

I do not have my ratings turned on for to me it does not matter what others think. My gallery is for my enjoyment. The only thing I use a lot is the popular listing feature to see which of mine cels are being viewed the most.

I don''t really check my ratings. I''m really happy with my rating right now, though. It''s nice to see how much my collection is enjoyed. I don''t concern myself too much over it, but if it went down to like, 4 or something, I''d probably cry ^^;;

The ratings are very strange and I wouldn''t take them too seriously. My site can go for 6 months without a new rating, and suddenly in a matter of days I''ll get 2 or 3 new ratings. My numbers have wildly changed over the past few years. I leave mine turned on more for entertainment value than anything else.

Acetateaddiction – Oh that’s true too! Friends will usually vote out of the friendship than objectively. Although I don’t really think there’s pre-defined standards on how to vote. Mostly as I see it, it’s gut feeling and instant reaction. LOL.

Conri – Hi! Thanks for responding. The only reason I can think of about the hits is because I have my gallery as my sig in messageboards and it’s on the frontpage of my Shinsengumi site. I’m awfully fond of letting people know I got new cels in.. Ah that’s coz I luv the cels I have right now. Totally agree with you about describing pieces of art! I try to do one for each of what I get but sometimes when I buy lots, I get some that I may not have anything to say about because I usually buy lots for just one cel or something. LOL.

JWR – I like the popular listing! It makes sense to me and I’m happy that my fave character is always on top clickage. ^__^

Pinkiepromise – I’m happy with the ratings too. And I also know there will always be someone who is more knowledgeable and can collect better pieces and make nicer galleries so I don’t worry about it that much. Basically as everyone else said it’s being happy with what you have and how you choose to present. My only thing is I guess I’m contemplating turning it off because I don’t want to end up worrying about it in the end.

Miss Z – I think the numbers will change a lot especially if the base (number of people who have voted) is low. The weight per one vote is bigger in those situations. And thanks for letting me know why you have it on! ^__^

This is quite subjective, but I like to keep ratings on. As long as people are honest, it can indicate what areas I need to put more effort into. Until I get 10''s across the board I''ll have to keep working on it! LOL

As JWR said, the Popular feature is interesting to refer to, especially when it indicates that your faves don''t usually match with public opinion- that''s cool *heh* I guess you can use that to gauge what series you should upload next.
Having an online galery is about keeping visitors happy as well as yourself. If I wanted to see my own artwork and not share them I''d refer to the actual pieces and the scans on my harddisk.

I have had the ratings on since I first opened up a couple years ago. Admittedly, it rather sucked as far as backgrounds and such, but I was new at all this, so tried to not let the low ratings get to me.
I think, though, that it''s encouraging to see the numbers creep ever upward since then. ~_^
I certainly don''t live or die by the ratings, but it''s fun to watch nonetheless. I''m actually way beyond what I ever expected to get as far as how many people have rated the gallery, and I''ve become satisfied in just seeing how many people will rate it. ^_^

We''ve completely turned off the ratings feature to keep the gallery in its purest form. We just want to share our passion for certain series and characters with others, without turning it into a popularity/high school contest. One major concern was had before deciding to turn off the rating was the constant heated flame wars from Animanga and how people would attack others. Frankly some people were mean and that does not help promote the hobby or unify the community which is already scattered and underground. At times, we still see this to this day here at RS and AB but thankfully less frequently.

Also, you really absolutely hit the nail on the head with this idea. "Although now that I think about it, it shouldn’t really matter because the cels that I get are beautiful judging from my own eyes only where factors include money, availability and preference, someone else may love them and someone else will not. I put them online because I love to share them with people who may like them and get some joy out of just seeing cels of characters/events we both happen to like." Our thoughts exactly! =)

Cheers!
