Titles within Titles

I think I misread Hyaku's post and assumed it was about the search engine, not the 1st page. I was thinking about the search engine. For example, what if I wanted to know what series were released in 1998? I could type the year into the search engine, then get a list of series for which production art is available. Then I could click on the title I wanted to see lists of galleries that had cels/drawings from it. Same kind of thing with studios. It would be nice to type in a series and get character lists too. Or what if it could sort series by character designer or director ? I know that this is probably too difficult and ambitious, but it would be cool to have! It would turn Rubberslug into a huge research database.

I like. I'm working on getting together a real, comprehensive list of shows into some kind of database. Problem with character designer and stuff is if it doesn't exist in some easy-to-grab format, there's absolutely no way I can index that stuff myself. Even the most hardcore among you would probably only know the character designer, director, etc. from more than a few dozen shows.

Keeping it updated would suck but the upside is that after about 2002, cel art is a little thin so we don't really care anyway, no?

Sub categories is a good idea but the search engine proposal could get too complicated as it requires each user to input the correct info in each of their pages. No spelling mistakes etc unless the search engine would compensate for that? There are still many people who have unknown cels, items they like to categorize differently that this system wouldn't be foolproof.

The interface I'd find useful would be one on the owners homepage listing the series. THESE could be narrowed down to a heading of (say) CLAMP (as in Hyaku's post) then the sub categories branch off (while we remain on the homepage) to include the series titles: X, Card Captor, Rayearth etc. These could branch off further into character or episode categories (if the owner wished), every link could could accessed by the viewer.
The look could be similar to 'Windows OS Start Button', or 'file finding' layout- Nero CD Burning, FTP uploading etc. I don't know if this has a specific name! ;)

This would compact the current gallery listings.

Already I can see this working on my gallery. I might have the title 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure' and within this category I'd have each of the 6 OVAs and a 'specials' section for settei/tests.
Right now I'd have to have 7 pages on my homepage to display this but with the new system it would be condensed into just 1.

OK, I'll shut up now. Back to my box under the stairs...

Wow, that's a great idea too! People with large collections of a particular anime could then subdivide their collection without all those individual listings. I have my biggest collection broken down into 7 categories, and it takes up a lot of room on my list. I have never liked the way it looks.

Addressing the other issue, perhaps the search engine could respond to certain key words. Maybe the name of the series in japanese, english, and some common combinations or abreviations of the names. If something isn't spelled quite right, it could respond with Did you mean? I was thinking of the expanded search engine not just for the users of the site but maybe even for researchers outside of collecting studying animation for various reasons. Rubberslug is a valuable visual library.

Yeah, the galleries as they are now are going to get some nifty DHTML-looking upgrades. I originally did the templates around 2000 designed strictly to be compatible with different browsers available at the time (NS4 and IE3 were my baselines).

Now that everything understands DHTML, I don't think that having optionally hidden things in pages. Basically, if you see something interface-wise on another site that you'd like to see in your Rubberslug gallery, just post it and I'll take notes for when I get around to cloning those features.

I've been strangely sleepy lately. All the time. I just slept from 5 PM to 9:30 PM and I'll probably sleep another few hours tonight. I think it's all the oily stuff I eat for lunch. (Sorry, tangent... I've only been awake for an hour since then and I'm already falling asleep at my keyboard.)
