Steamboy

I got a chance to see "Steamboy" last night at my local art house. I thought the movie was pretty good, but it had a weird feel to it. It felt more like I was watching a Disney movie and not an anime. I think part of the reason I feel this way is because it was dubbed. Not that it was a bad dub, but I was hoping to see it in Japanese. Has anyone else seen it yet?

Sadly enough I haven't would you recommend it? I would probably only be able to see it in the dubbed version, would it still be worth seeing?

Its usually the case, you always have to see the movie in its origional form and language.

I have yet to see Steamboy but I do look forward to it.
As far as watching it subbed You may want to check with your local art house and see if they have a showing undubbed. I have found that some art houses set aside a "Late" show for those who want to see it in the original form.
I myself don't have a problem with a dub so long as it is done well. It is a fact of life that without the dub's the Anime industry would not have taken off here in the USA. We would not have the Anime network, Adult Swim, Anime unleashed or other channels showing Anime.
We would never see all the shows being brought over now and would have to rely on fan subs.
Like it or not 95% of the dvd sales in the US are to casual fans who would not buy them unless dubbed. Great movies such as Millennium Actress & Ghost in the Shell Innocence sales have suffered due to they only being avalible subbed.
The best thing is when you get it on dvd you can watch it how ever you want.

To answer Sailor_Gohan, yes I would recommend seeing it. I thought the animation was very well done and had a very Katsuhiro Otomo look to it. A lot of the machinery looked similiar to the stuff that in "Akira" and "Cannon Fodder". Also the character Ray looks a hell of a lot like Tetsou...

To address JWR, I thought the dub was pretty well done. It was nice to hear the characters have British accents. My only complaint was that Patrick Stewart's voice didn't seem to fit too well as the grandfather...

I also understand the need for dubs. I have series I will only watch the dub of. I think a lot of this stems from the fact that I don't remember there being a lot of choice when I first started watching anime...
