Last week, Sidney Lumet (Twelve Angry Men, Network, lots of other neat films) won a Lifetime Achivement Award at the Academy Awards. This week, I'm reading his book (or possibly one of his books, not sure), entitled, "Making Movies". It gives a director's perspective on different aspects of film creation from how to select movies to camera work to getting the best performances out of actors. It's pretty good and very conversational.

So, this week's question is about making anime. I left a few choices out that I thought might be misinterpreted or would be chosen as easy-way-out options. A big catagory was editing... but I think most of a general audience would rather do one of the four things listed above. If there *is* anyone out there who would specifically be interested in editing or mixing (sorta falls under sound), record your comments below.

Director and producer were left out because I thought it might be misunderstood what this involves. It's a lot of people management and logistics. The work/reward tradeoff isn't nearly as glamourous as some people would like to believe. But hey, you all collect production art and many of you would be quite capable of supervising production on a given work.

I picked writer. Design would be my second choice. Sound would be third or so, from the music side. Animation would trail the list, only because (I believe) I'm a better musician than illustrator. The thought of having something I worked on butchered in production is a little scary though.

"Double set of books?,Er..what do you mean my accounting practices are shady?"
"Royalties??.. Can't we add that to my back taxes?"..
"Muhahahaa..(exec.produc. on the way to bank).. muhahahaha".

...which is exactly why executive producer is not a choice.

It is a little odd that most people so far have picked sound. I'm assuming... voice acting? Eesh, I'd be horrible at this. I was told during high school debate that I had a voice of a really boring TV anchor.

If by some chance it's because there's a lot of musical people out there, we should start an official Rubberslug garage band and open for weird Japanese pop groups at anime conventions.
