That's an interesting quandary. For myself, I can't think of a single occassion when character design wasn't the first thing I looked at when judging whether or not to check out a series. I figured it was just because I'm a visually-oriented person, but in this hobby that's probably true of a lot of people. And then there's gonna be those who prioritize character, and who knows what else...? I wonder what are the most common things collectors look for, and in what order their priorities fall... Future poll? :)

Design and color scheme come first for me, but while character appeal and a substantial storyline are secondary, they're still critical factors in deciding whether or not I'll develop an attachment worth spending my money on. Since my finances are extremely tight, I try to limit myself to cels of my favorite characters from my favorite shows, and only best compositions.

Keyword "try" of course. I get sentamental about specific moments too, regardless of quality sometimes. ;)
