Insurance coverage for your collection
Has anyone gotten insurance coverage for their cel collection? If so, who do you use for the coverage? How much does it cost? How did you appraise the value of your collection?
The more I get into the hobby and the more I invest in it, the more I worry that regular homeowners insurance may not be enough. These cels are one of a kind fine art after all and some of them are bought and sold for substantial money.
Generally home owners or in my case renters insurance does not cover fine art. What I did was make a color file of the more valuable, never leaving my hands, cel thumbnails. You need to put a brief description beside each one, covering the vitals. Then I took that list to an animation cel dealer (he does Disney but I just told him basically what each was worth on the market) He reprints it on letterhead and signs off. My dealer did it for $50. This is what you submit to the insurance company along with estimates on other art, in my case old comics and statues. Then they are able to issue a rider policy for a few dollars more. Downside is the nature of cel collection is your collection changes, new art is not covered and you have to go through the proccess every so often.
