It could very well be, but I wouldn't put much money on it. It's possible because many art designers, especially for film fx houses and "superhero" adaptations, stand a reasonable chance at being comic book, fantasy art, or animation lovers. Unlike the majority of the rest of us who work in banks or office buildings, they're probably doing something they have a real passion for. =)

It's not that much of a stretch to assume, for instance, that every single person on the senior fx animation staff for a movie such as this has seen Vampire Hunter D (at least one version).
