The "invite" business is not a stuffy exclusive thing, but just the most effective way of keeping spammers from registering and then unleashing so much junk mail that the forum is destroyed. That has happened to some other unsecured forums where I used to hang out, and the Beta team wants to make sure that won't happen. We haven't had a real dither among real members for a couple of years now, and there are mods who would step in if that were ever to happen.
