Original Evangelion Animation Cels

Tell me everything you know about them.


I heard that Gainax didn't actually officially release these and a lot of them leaked. Is that a rumour?

Do you own any original Evangelion cels, and how much did you purchase them for?


I've heard they're sold for ridiculous amounts of money but I remember seeing them at conventions before so I can't imagine they are THAT expensive.

However, I could be wrong, that's why I came to you guys :D

I heard another rumour fairly recently that Gainax did eventually release some Eva cels which might explain why they seem to be coming up for auction more often. At one time it was only whatever the staff took.

I've done some maths and worked out an average for all my Eva cels which is $520 each minus the Pen-Pen which I consider to have gotten dirt cheap so it mucks up the averages. ^_^; Including Pen-Pen the average is $450. I've only been collecting since 2004 so I missed the time when Eva cels were few and far between.

I don't collect Asuka or Rei though but if I did I think my average cel price would be alot higher.

Yes there have been stories floated that a lot of the early Eva cels that hit the market were sold without the studio's approval.

Some had been given as gifts to employees who in turn sold them as well as some that might have been snuck out.

Over the last few years , more and more have hit the market and I have seen pictures of shelves of nice cels on display at Mandarake stores in Japan.

You do need to be careful for due to the high dollar commanded there has popped up a cottage industry making fake cels.

There are only a couple of YJ sellers I trust for them foremost Godhand_777 who I bought my 2 Eva cels from.

Also you should consider any of the established cel dealers such as Asylum Anime , Anime Link or Neichibei Anime Club that have a good reputation.
