One for all, or all for one?
I focus on characters from a series. Mostly because it is only those charaters that I am interested in. And I try to limit myself as best as I can ^_^ My one exception is Daa Daa Daa cels. They are all too cute to focus on any one charater.
I can tell you are utter bored to dredge up this kind of a topic.... :P
For myself I collect specific characters I look up to. I feel a personal bond with these fictional characters and it would be an understatement to say I admire them. For example from Macross, I strongly admire Misa and Minmay, one followed duty and sacrificed much of her youth, the other followed her dreams and sacrificed family and love. For GunBuster Noriko is the greatest heroine in all of anime IMO. As an only child she grew up lost, undisciplined, physically/emotionally weak and without love. Suprisingly, she became the strongest and most alturistic character ever! She willingly sacrifices her own happiness, friendships, chance at love/living life to save the entire planet many MANY times over. And she did all of this without religion or any superpowers too boot!
Over all, I try to collect less characters instead of tons of series, since I like to focus on QUALITY not quantity. IMO it is infinitely more prudent (financially speaking) to focus on a select few characters/series. This way I focus on the characters I possess the strongest affinity with (not simply oooh eyecandy). IMO the likelihood these exclusive few characters will remain treasured by me for decades to come is pretty damn high.

It all depends on the series. Some I'm happy to have any cels at all (Unico). Others I prefer groups (Mobile Suits in Gundam Wing, and Masho in Samurai Troopers), but have also collected other cels I liked in those series. Some I'll collect nearly any cels from (Jubei-Chan). And then there's B't X. I only collect Metal Face. If I was collecting from any really expensive series I would probably only collect the characters that I liked.

Oh this is my first post in the forum. Eeek!
My answer to this is that my collection is painfully biased towards one character-a little through intention and a little by accident. Yes, I do want that many cels of that character...but I also wish that getting all the cels of him didn't take up all money that could be used on getting other characters!
But my collection only focuses on one series. (well, it would be two if I could find any good ones from the second!) I have characters that I really adore who I really keep meaning to get more cels of but I just keep getting distracted!
But the way my collection stands right now, I might as well get "Yes, I am a rabid fangirl" tattood on my face and be done with it! (haha)
