Yes quite a few top notch writers have entered into writing stories for comic books lately.
Joe R. Landsdale has written several stories just for comics as well as Harlan Ellison had a comic book series called Dream Corridor after which he collected the written stories in his book Slipage.
J. Michael Straczynski the writer/creator of Babylon 5 wrote 2 original stories for comics Rising Stars & Midnight Nation before signing on to write several story lines with Marvel.

Several other top writers like Neil Gaiman & Alan Moore got their start by writing for comic books.

"Similarly, King chose to work with Marvel to develop his "Dark Tower" book series, instead of making it into a film or TV miniseries."

This makes me happy. ^_^
