Care Packages to Foreign Lands
A Magic 8 Ball guaranteed to give accurate fortunes! I have one on my desk and it never lies to me. I think they come in keychain size if the regular is too heavy.
Recepient is a female university student who is apparently a huge cosplay fan (hence the sappy fashion mags). Yes, it's cafe girl, the one from the picture to those who have seen it. =)
From the little Japanese I can read and the translations I get from my Japanese exchange student friend, she's either a bigger geek than I am or a total psychopath. ("super otaku" as he put it, and that was coming from a guy who can identify most Gundam mechs -- and their pilots -- without looking at the box.)
Tabloids: Ahhh! She might think we're overrun with 800-pound men, celebrity babies, and spiders the size of your car. It would probably terrify her, although I'm sure they have similar crap there.
Souveniers: I totally forgot to include Texas crap! I don't think the "rides horses to work" myth is as prevalent there as it was in western Europe though.
Music videos/ads: good idea, but she's not a computer person. I think her mail gets sent through a combination of her mobile phone and public university computers.
Sports: no idea if she likes sports, although the vast majority of Japanese people I've met seem to all have a basic understanding of baseball. I'm not a baseball fan so I'm stuck here.
Magic 8-ball: Ha! I could send a keychain version, which would probably make her go.... whaaaat? That did make me think that I should probably find some distinctly american keychain or cell phone strap type object to send along.
Thanks for the suggestions! Let me know if you come up with others.

4) a sweater
5) photos when you were little
6) minature flags of your state
7) tourist sovenirs- license plates, snow globes, etc..
8) representative food of your state ( non perishable of course)
and a nice letter to cap it.
