Cel care
So I've been trying to clean up some of my cels recently and I've been wondering if anyone knows a way to get tape residue off of them.
I'm pretty sure that if it was non-acidic tape it wouldn't matter, but I bought them that way, so I have no way of knowing what it is, and I'd prefer to err on the side of caution. Any suggestions?
Hello Klet,
You can remove the tape goo with alcohol and a soft rag.
NOTE: *(do not get the alcohol on the paint as this can remove the paint from the cel.)*
Make the rag damp but not dripping and hold it on the goo few a few min.
And then lightly rub the goo off, It may take a few times to get all the goo off so take your time.
After your remove the goo clean the cel with distiled water on a soft rag by blotting and let the cel dry over night before you store it.
You can use the inside of a cotton t-shirt as the rag, The inside is softer than the outside.
As always take your time and do not rub hard as this can scratch your cel.
I hope this helps out some, When your done come back and post about it here for all to read.

oh my god, don't do what i do. i use a piece of scotch transparent tape and i place it over the residue and ripe it off like a bikini wax job. sometimes i just blot it with the tape until it comes off. it works but reading backlot's response i'll probably not do that again. if the residues on the paint i don't touch it, i just use this on the clear portion. for spots of paint i just rub my fingernail againest it until it comes off. for white spots i used saliva on a finger to rub it off and for stuck pencil sketches i use the hot lightbulb treatment. don't do what i do. i am so wrong. let me go to the bad corner for a 20.
*giggle* "bikini wax" method. :D
Penalty box for two minutes, where you will feel shame. And then you are free! XD
(HOCKEY'S COMING!!!!)
Hello Genechin,
Yes, Please don't use tape to remove the residue
it can bend, crease, wrinkle and can rip your cel,
Be very careful around the punch holes as the cel is very weak there and will rip easy.
As for using your finger nail to remove the paint spots you can scratch your cel doing this. I would leave it there, If you look on the DVD you can sometimes see the paint spots on the screen as this is a rare thing leave them there this can sometimes up the value for some collectors that collect that type of thing.
And yes there are collectors that collect them that way and go out of there way to find them.
"NEVER" use a light bulb to remove a sketch it will cause the paint to come off the cel and or crack the paint in the future by drying the paint out like paint on a sun facing wall outside, This will make the paint brittle and very fragile and will fade the paint also.
Try to place the cel by a cracked open window cel side down at night only and the next morning pull up on the drawing a little at a time all the way around the cel, Just a little each day and do this for a few nights, this will let the moist air get into the paper and help remove the sketch.
Place a pen or a few coins between the layers so the paper is open to the moist air inbetweeen each night.NOTE: Take your time this can take up to two weeks to work.
Don't leave the cel in the window in the daytime,The sun will be to hot for your cel and can hurt it.
This works for lightly stuck drawings.
White spots are one of three things, Mold or background paint dust or just plain dust.
To remove the dust use distiled water or for mold use alcohol but rinse with the distiled water afterwards and pat dry don't rub it will scratch your cel.
sometimes the white spots are very small scratchs caused by background paint dust or just plain dust these can not be removed, But the cel should be cleaned with distiled water and put in a new cel bag for storage after drying over night.Always put your cel in a cel bag if you have it on a background to protect the cel from the background paint dust, the dust is sand that is in the paint you should always do this if you are storing the setup, You should also do this if you are going to frame the cel with the background, Just use a oversize cel bag so the edges can not be seen in the frame, This will help with sticking and protect your cel also.
Never reuse a cel bag, Dust gets in every time you open it and can not be gotten out so throw it away and use a new one each time you take the cel out.
Spit is not a good thing to use on your cels it has acids in it that can stain your cels with time,It will not show up at the time you use it but will in the future show up as a black stain on your cel paint.
Old school art dealers used to use spit to read the signature on old paintings as this made the signature stand out so they could read them, We now know this is very bad for paint and will darken the paint and lighten the signature even more, So that it can not be read in the future.
"SO NO SPIT ON YOUR CELS"
I hope these few words of wisdom help some.
