Question about new features..

When you click "save login", your computer will tell me via a cookie whenever you hit the RS home page. This means, even when you log out, you will show up as "on the site" when you hit the home page again. Of course, this probably would cause some confusion when you log out and the home page says you logged back in.

I've tested this, and it works as expected if the explanation makes sense. If you come back to the RS page, you are automatically marked as "online", but you can't edit your gallery or anything until you enter your password.

Perhaps I can make a distinction between "logged in: active" (password entered, editing site) and "logged in: passive" (isn't really password-logged in)?

I was going to make it remember passwords, but this could be bad if we eventually move to letting people sell stuff online. I don't trust RS security as it is now because transmissions are not encrypted. Encrypted forms cost a few hundred more bucks to implement.

Okay, help me with this one jn. :-)
jn,

If...

That means if I have cookies turned off in my browser, then I cannot log-in? Or if I set up my firewall, I have to turn it off? hmm...sigh..

(YES the answer to both questions,,okay next)

If...hypothetically ;),

I set RS or my gallery up as my homepage, it will mean that I am logged on all of the time? (after having logged in intially of course)Even if I am not active)? :(

If.. (extreme scenario, but possible)

Even if I don't log in, but have come by RS (or have logged-in and log-out) but still seen as active since I have an ADSL 24 hr connection, and I leave my browser page to RS, and then leave the monitor and go away on a trip in Hawaii someplace.. Hmm..I will be still seen as active..? :O

As you may have guessed,..I'm really not feeling the "itemized tracking device annoucement-thing" as an additional good add-on except for admin. IMHO. I guess I will just get used to it...
I understand the securtiy issues, maybe it is a good time for a call for donations..Now that would be an interesting stat..maybe you could send the MOD's an update...

Just joking...

I just feel it seems like a "chat" kinda announcement with no chat abilites. Sorry for the rant, no further comments on the issue.

Ah, as clarification, after about 10 minutes of inactivity, you are automatically marked as logged out. No intervention required to keep loggin yourself out.

This turns into one of those "if a tree falls in a forest" thing because you can't see the effects of you being not logged in if you keep refreshing the page. Every time you hit a page on the site, the timer restarts.

Is it working as expected? Yes. Should we *want* it to work some other way? Not sure about that one yet.

I could set it so that it only tracks people who are password-online, but the "members online" thing would look rather barren since few people log in every time they visit the site -- usually only when updating their gallery.

Rhey: I thought I saw your name on the front page a few days ago O.o.. So maybe you just didn't catch your name up there?

About this "i don't want to be seen" stuff. Personally, I don't really care if people see me on or not. I don't feel violated or anything. ^^;;
But it does make sense that it only show when the person is making adjustments to the page. But even still, not all the login's make sense or serve purpose for people who aren't regular cel forum visitors or really REALLY in touch with everyone's "log in" name. So if "bobbyjoe34" logs in.. that doesn't tell me anything. I don't know who's gallery that is ^^;

Also, if this was such a big issue with some people, you can make an "on/off" switch available on the members home page? If someone REALLY wants their "sneaky updating" to be hidden, then they have that option. Rubberslug is so incredibly "happy-go-secret" anyways, I don't know why people are so darned sneaky! lol

(and btw E, I know what you mean when you say that it's like an invitation to chat with no "chat" feature.... but this is just my point of view on it). ^_^
