Movie: Casshern
Has anyone heard of this movie or the incredable true story behind it?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405821/
Casshern is AWESOME- the director, Kiriya, took about 20 fresh students from some computer special effects class and got them to work for him on this movie. The went to a computer recycle plant/graveyard and for like a thousand bucks scrapped together computers for everyone. Then they dished out cash for the best editing software money could buy.
Anyway I bring this up because if you haven't seen this movie the FX are pretty DAMN good for a bunch of green non-Hollywood nobodys. I swear- sure the story is really difficult and the acting is kinda too- it looks like big-budget multi-million dollar FX extravaganza.

This is truly an impressive achievement.
its an awesome movie to watch i agree, its a bit too long for my taste (by almost half an hour or so) but well worth it.. it is strange that the main villain get a very (very!!) long speech about the rights and wrongs in an action movie but hey.. anyway the special effects just plainly rocked..
That does look kinda interesting. It looks like Ghost in the Shell, which is not so bad I guess. The trailer feels always like "Versus" -- a movie billed by the theather to be a "time-traveling martial arts zombie gangster epic". Indeed, it was.
Live action Cashan/Casshern is very nihilistic.
Life stinks, the very act of living causes pain, suffering and misunderstandings. Mankind had a chance for greatness but we're not worth it. Death is best.
There isn?t as much action as the ad suggests and there are a few things that make no sense, like how BK-1 goes from living in a wasteland with nothing to armies of robots in what seems to be a few days. Also there doesn?t seem to be any reason why the army decides to try to kill BK-1 and his comrades in the first place. The look of the film is a lot more professional than Versus.
The movie also needed a lot of editing and the movie probably would?ve been better if it didn?t try to pay homage to the original cartoon. Some scenes looked as if they were only in the movie to tell you, yes this is based on the comic, look there?s his dog.
But I liked it.
Saw the movie, I completely agreed with the observations about how humanity constants inflicts needless pain on others. A wretched cycle where one oppresses another, while the majority just they to LIVE the best they can, seeking whatever small measures of happiness they can carve out. There were some highly piognant moments in the film, reminds me of Patlabor 1 the movie.
Visually the film was stunning and wonderful to watch. A friend who also watched it didn't care for the use of lighting and overall story. I could see how the film dragged at times, but the theme did show promise. Many detailed interwoven plots and interesting characters really made me think twice about subtle clues that were dropped.
Oh and honestly IMO Tetsuya was an idiot for charging off to war leaving behind his family and new fiance. What a moron, war is hell and he refused to believe his father. It's sad this naivite regarding war is still played out in many films and anime series even today.
Overall worthwhile watching but only if you have the patience to actively watch it, this is not a passive film to absorb.
