Art from the New Appleseed
I got in my copy of the new Appleseed today and just finished watching it. I thought the movie was pretty good when you compare it to the manga. It was cool to see Olympus look like Shirow's drawings. I also liked the look of the of the mecha and Briareos...
I do seem to have a problem with the art for all the humans/bioroids though. I don't know what it was, but they kind of reminded me of bad CG characters from video games. I think that Hitomi was the character I had the biggest problem with. Something just seemed wrong with her eyes...
If this Appleseed movie is supposed to be what the future of 3D CG animation has in store for us, I'd have to say that we may be better off with traditional art. What do you guys think?
P.S. The Briareos figure wasn't worth the extra two weeks it took for me to get it. I already ripped his arm off several times trying to position his gun...
I seem to recall reading about how they used similar motion-capture technology to "The Polar Express". The CG was combined with real life action movements. Your right though- these CG characters have a long, long way to go. I have a feeling as technology gets better, they'll find ways to make it marketable to world audiences, else they have another multi-million dollar CG bomb like "Final Fantasty:The Spirits Within"
I saw this movie with low expectations and I was pleasently suprised. Main reason is due to a decent story, which is very hard to come by these days.
I hate the look of CG anime with passion. It should be considered a crime. Traditional cel animation will always be better. The purpose of anime should not be real life realism.
Although i liked it a lot, and appleseed is one of my favorite manga, i did like the stackload of cliches like that everybody knew deunans mom and dad, and so one. it looked very good though and the action sequences and the mobile fortresses ruled..
