The source of my cel unhappiness...
last modified: Friday, February 23, 2007 (3:31:16 PM)
I know now why cel collecting is so frustrating for me. I'm so busy comparing my own gallery to others, it makes me feel miserable. "Oh look, they have 50 cels of this series! I gotta catch up!" or "Wow, what a pretty/rare cel! I'm so upset that I don't have one like that!" "Why do they have all the nice ones? They must be rich/know something I don't know!" are common in my mind.

What's worse is I do this to myself. After I buy/win a cel I decide to do a series search and find all these wonderful cels, to the point where I plummet into feeling that I shouldn't have even bothered with what I just got, it suddenly seems pathedic/doesn't matter anymore. I guess I want so badly for my collection to be awesome...

Anyway, not sure what I can do to stop this. I want to start collecting Nadia: Secret of Blue Water, but I haven't found anything good, and anything DECENT I find either has crazy bidders or the price was stupid in the first place. $450 for a head shot of Nadia? I mean, come ON!

Hi there. Well I''m one of the people who likes to visit your gallery, I admire your Chacha, Daa daa daa and Pokemon sections a lot. When I first started this collecting thing, I felt the same exact way as you did. I didn''t even want to open my gallery because I didn''t think I had enough cels or good shots, etc. etc. And everyone else had everything else that was good and I thought it was too late to start anything. I mean prices of series that I love are a tad too high, the series that aren''t so popular that I like are a bit rare. Things like that and I look at Japanese galleries and other cel galleries and I go wow... It''s a humbling experience at times. But as I''ve come to find out, first collect what you like and then collect within your means. Don''t drive yourself crazy over what you don''t have -yet-. I know for a time I was a bit insane. Hehe. But when I think about it and look at what I do have, it makes me happy even if it''s not the best or rare or expensive cel, it''s -my- cel. I got it under my own terms. Take a moment and take out your cels and look at them, curate them, find the scenes where they''re from, things like that will make you feel good about what you have instead of worrying about what you don''t have.

If it makes you feel any better, your gallery makes me envious of some of your things. D: I DROOL for your Team Rocket arts!

O_O Oh my! I really don''t know why you would feel that way! I just got done viewing all your cels and see nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with what you collect. You collect what you want to, and because you enjoy it. Don''t ever compare your gallery to someone elses! Not everyone has the same taste, nor do they exactly have the same amount of money to spend.

And I like what hajimenokizu said, "it makes me happy even if it''s not the best or rare or expensive cel, it''s -my- cel." That is completely true. You wouldn''t believe how many snotty people there are that think their gallery is better than others and hold themselves to those higher-than-thou standards. Even having the nerve to belittle other people''s galleries and tell them what they should and shouldn''t collect. I''ve seen this happen, and it''s even happened to me. But you take it as a grain of salt, because it is your gallery.

Perhaps if you see a piece you really really like and that you want, save some money in a reserve fund, so when a sequence mate makes itself available, you will have those funds to make that purchase. Only purchase what -you- want, not what -others- may have or b/c they make a big deal of having one of the few or the only one from that sequence. It''s your money, your hobby, your life. Make yourself comfortable with your spending limit and your wants, and do understand that many of us out here enjoy your gallery. You have a wonderful collection, and knowing that you actually own pieces of your favorite show should be enough to make you happy rather than wondering if your gallery is elite or not. Chin up! :D

Focus on your own lovelies. ^_^ Stroll through your own gallery. Get out those cel books and leaf through every piece you own. You''ll fall in love again with your own precious artworks again. ^_^

There''s always someone who has "more" or "better" in your own eyes, but just remember to focus on what you like about your own pieces, and enjoy them.

Do remember, your collection is your own and you don''t need to compare it to anyone elses. a lot of us have been at it for quite a while , hence we are surprised to one day look at our gallery and find that we have a large amount cels from certain series that are special to us.
Gallery size does not = awesome.
A small collection of nice cels is just as impressive, don''t get caught up in thinking this hobby is a competition and enjoy the lovely cels you have in your gallery.

Trust me, I know where you are coming from. I was there. When I started, I knew I could never build great collections of series that I admired then like Beebop, Escaflowne, or Trigun, but I decided I would find stuff that I liked that was a bit off the beaten track. Most of the collections I built up with my daughter were of lesser-known series. Heck, some I still haven''t seen and know little about. Some later became more popular since I started collecting them, but some I think I might be the only one collecting them on RS. I can see you like some of the same series I do too. Just collect what you like and enjoy them. You seem to have an interest in series for children. There are still some great cels out there from them like the Yat pan you bought. (I saw that on YJ amd was tempted myself!) Eventually before you know it, your collection will grow and develop its own style. When I think of different people whose collections I like, say wELCOME cONSUMER, Klet, Sugarflower, Aernath, and lots of others, I think their collections reflect them. They aren''t about being flashy, but instead show a devotion to the things they love. (some more like obsession *cough*Aernath*cough*)

First, totally off topic . . .

Squeeee! Vapalla likes my collection! :D ;_; <--tears of happiness

You see, I can totally understand what you''re going through. I do that all the time--especially with my Esca collection. I''ve managed to get some lovely pieces, but it doesn''t match up to some of my favorite collections out there. Just seeing Vapalla mention my gallery surprised me and made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Whenever I feel the way that you''re feeling, I take out my cel books and slowly leaf through the pages. Soon, I''ve fallen in love with my collection all over again--even my silly little Hitomis that I collect because she''s the cheapest and most available Esca art you''ll find, and I just love the collection that much.

Believe me, you have some quality pieces that I''m jealous of. ^_~

I meant to say show, not collection. XD But I do love my collection, too!

Understandable for sure... the cure being content with what you have in your life. Less is more!
