Elitism in cel collecting ?
last modified: Thursday, November 15, 2007 (7:36:30 AM)
This happened to me (even if not directly), not too long ago and fits right in my rumblings, so I thought of sharing it with you.
I'll obviously not use any names, but let's just say I was paying close attention to some YJ auctions, that could interest me. I asked a friend to contact the seller, since usually they don't reply to english questions, in order to be able to actually see a picture of the item being sold. Not only did this person refuse to provide any pictures of said items, but also said something like this: "I don't sell to beginners". I was in awe really. I lost interest in those auctions immediately. I've made quite a few good connections, ever since I started collecting cels, so I never witnessed such behavior before. To me, Cel collecting is a passion above all, but is coupled with some business ethics, so everything was always dealt with professionalism and in a friendly manner. Not this case though. I'm wondering, did this or something similar, ever happened to anyone else ?

This really isn''t a new thing. There are different classes of collectors - ethically and socially. Although we all ''play nice'' here and on Beta, we''re all out to get the cels we want, and some people have that total mindset with no thought or regard for others. And as for your situation, as the above mentality develops, they begin "NO NEWBIES CAN BUY MY ITEMS GRRR".

It''s sad. Yeah. I hate you had to deal with it. :\

"I dont'' sell to beginners." Wha?! Hmmm, what if a "beginner" (and I''m not calling you a beginner, Silus) had a couple K to spend on cels? Then what? Talk about bad business policies. Sorry this had to happen to you, Silus! Glad you didn''t waste any $$$ or more time on this seller.

Thanks for your support everyone :)

@NurseNikki
I thought so. This probably happened more times, but people just didn''t talk much about it.

@GB & moonrabitt
Yeah. My money is a good as the money from anyone else, which was one of the reasons why I didn''t get the attitude.

@Xeno
No, I don''t, because it was my japanese friend that requested the pics, directly to the seller. But I believe this seller, includes that phrase, in his item description.

It exists and it sucks but it is a reality we have to accept dealing with this hobby, just like hoarders, blackhole collectors and overpriced dealers and bidding wars.

Yes business is business but the seller or business has the right to refuse anyone. Not saying it is correct but they do have the right to reject your bid and to sell to whomever they want. Elitism maybe but we cannot change others, so we must accept it and deal with it.

Personally I don''t think you did anything wrong but what you experienced is just another example why generally Japanese businesses do not share or understand the Westernized customer service practices. Don''t be surprised b/c over in JP and other parts of Asia, the seller is king and the buyer takes it or leaves it.

If you think this is bad you need to visit Japan and go around Nakano and Aki where businesses can and WILL tell you something is not for sale, even when an item clearly has a pricetag. What they are saying is I won''t sell this to you, tough sh*t crybaby, you cannot do anything about it.

Not everyone is rationale or reasonable regardless of the hobby or business practices and we should understand/accept this... doing so will make life much easier. Hang in there!
