Wishlist or Impossiblelist ?
last modified: Monday, October 15, 2007 (10:33:41 AM)
I'm new to cel collecting, but I'm not new to collections. I collect many items and most of them, are, in one way or another, related to art.
But I have to say, that when it comes to wishlist items, I'm at a loss with many of them. I mean, patience is no doubt a virtue, but when I look at some of items in that list, I get a bit frustrated. Why ? Because some (if not all) of them, are probably hidden in a vault, in some guy/girl's private collection, which will either never be shown to the public or, if it's ever sold, it will be done between close friends or family.
Not to mention the out of this earth price tag, any of these items will carry. So even if it does go out, for public sale/auction, it will most likely be unreachable by me. I do have to eat you know :)
That said, I would like to know your thoughts about this. Please share!

Honestly, I used to think the same thing concerning my Holy Grail, never to be found and if found "would it even be for sale/offer". Eight years later patience paid off, it was well worth the wait... even with the accompanying price tag.

People need to be positive in thinking, especially in this hobby, otherwise you will lose interest or become bitter towards the hobby itself. Look at your wishlist as goal''s they are there to guide you and hopefully one day reach but as in life some goals take longer than others but everything is attainable at least until either you or your body gives up, lol.

Ms. Poe

I''ll tell you one thing...you''ll never see the Momomi shower scene cels for sale...A private collector who is richer than god bought them up last year for *thousands* of dollars a piece...They were beautiful...a few of us collectors banded together to try and get one of them, but we were beat hard...

I''m sure James (Krafty) has pictures of the auctions...

I have a choice scene from each of your wishlist series...One''s that I''ve had seath threats over...*glares at Jon and James*...

Drop me a line and I''ll give you access to my private gallery so you can check em out...

Certain items will probably never been seen on the market for sale. On the other hand, if they are ever for sale (even at an outrageous price), it is worth it to know that they exist and were not destroyed by the studio, or a careless owner.

I know that I''ve seen a few A1end cels with matching backgrounds pass me by, while I bemoan the state of my bank account. But the fact that they were sold at all gives me a glimmer of hope that the new owner will resell it in 5 years, or so. And maybe at that point, I''ll have the money.

It''s all about being patient. And having the right connections. ^_~

Even if you never actually purchase any of the cels on your wishlist, it''s nice to have something to strive for. At this point in my collection (after 4 years), I have purchased 3 wishlist items. I have yet to find my "dream" cels...

I remember bidding $2500 on one of those shower scenes Poe speaks of. I have to hand it to the Ziggler...he''s probably the biggest Umetsu fan of us all.

It''s nice to have a Wishlist but don''t think you''ll ever see those items for sale, it''s not good to get your hopes up thinking they are going to pop up. That''s not being pessimistic, only realistic.

Like you say, Marco, many will already be in collector''s hands and it may be years until they get bored of them and decide to sell so keep monitoring the auctions at least every 3 days.

As for the KITE shots on your wishlist, similar cels have come and gone which is a good indicator that the whole sequence had been ''saved'' from the studio. The young Sawa has been up twice. The first sold in June 2005 for 45,000 yen, the second was 30,000 yen in September 2005.
The other Sawa ones might cost you 15,000-30,000 yen if they came up on Yahoo Auctions Japan.

I don''t know if we''ll ever see Yellow Star cels, that''s an unknown entity in terms of availablity- they might have been destroyed/lost or a handful of collectors have the whole series...

Personally I find my own wishlist useful to glance at to see what I need to focus on. So often I glide along absorbing everything that''s there when I should be prioritizing on a selection.

When a Wishlist item does show itself, it''s a magical feeling of excitment and adrenaline-fuelled pleasure. It kinda turns me into a primal animal with the "mine-mine-mine" mindset, which probably isn''t a good thing but it''s funny to look back on! *LOL*

I hope a couple of Wishlsit items come your way, Marco.

I agree with otakusin, in this hobby you really need to think positive and keep at it. Coming into this hobby one has to realize that it’s not going to be like a video which has a beginning, middle & an end. This hobby is whatever you put into it; your dedication over the years in collecting the pieces you wish to collect will be reflected in your gallery. There is going to be a ton of bumps in the road, (hell most of the time) either money issues, flood of cels, personal health (basically anything that would deter you from using your available income on cels). But the fact is, I don’t care what people tell you, if you keep at it, and are constantly alert and patient then I am sure you will obtain several of your wishlist cels. From my own personal experience, it has been a year since I collected and due to my dedication for a particular series (if your curious type “Juuni Kokki” in the RS search to locate my site) I have been able to amass a decent sized collection. When I originally started out I thought it was going to be impossible, + a lot of people told me to give up because as far as sketch based series (non-cel) shows are concerned generally if you don’t buy them within the first year the series comes out/ends your going to be out of luck. Regardless what anyone told me I kept at it (and continue to) I constantly check dealer sites, ebay, YJ, etc. The essence of this hobby is being aware of what’s going down and where and simply placing yourself in the middle. Connections are important, after you buy from a dealer several times, and build trust, you may be able to secure connections overseas with individuals to keep an eye out for your wishlist items / put you at the top of there list if they were to ever obtain the item. Friends are also important, however I want to warn you from getting to close to anyone who is collecting your series, backstabbing is common in the collecting scene and who might perceive to be your friend today, is your enemy in tomorrows

auction. So in conclusion, this hobby Is a wild ride, has its ups and downs, but if you keep at it, are dedicated, are constantly scourging the internet for cels of your series, willing to risk it all, I am sure without a doubt you will obtain the cels you wish, all in due time. I wish you many years of fun, so let the good times roll!

I''ll just add a link to my most recent "Featured Cel," which still gives me the willies when I look at it, after 5 years.

I''m not very patient... It''s something this hobby is trying hard to teach me.. :) And I trying to learn. LOL. I''ve been at it for a little over a year and yes I have found some of my truest wishlist, a couple I will even dare to say dream cels. It was a lot of work and I think it will be a lot more work in the future. It doesn''t get me down that much however sometimes I do get a bit antsy if I can''t find a cel I like for a few months. I''m more patient now on specific cels... It lets me look forward to something... In the meantime, I try to build my gallery in the way that it''s not really about getting specific cels but something more akin to a general goal, my goal is telling a story in my gallery at least for the main series or character I collect. I get closer everyday and I am happy.

After getting several cels that I thought I would never own, I tend to think more positively of collecting. I''ve lost so many times but either found a sequence mate or a better cel. The one''s I''ve missed prior to collecting, that I wish I got, I finally got the majority save two cels. Then my ultimate dream cel, I''ve seen so many cels comes from that episode that I am pretty sure it exists. Also my other wishlist (one of them a dream) I''ve seen them, I''m just waiting for the owners to finally decide it''s time to pass it on. In the meantime I gaze at them longingly from afar. LOL... It has been great. To me it''s not an impossibility at all because I''ve received so much help from others... Even if I do lose auctions 90% of the time (and I tried really hard). LOL.

*scratches cheek* Hey, you never know. My Holy Grail was given to me by a complete stranger out of -nowhere-. He could''ve easily sold it for $1,000 or more, but he said he chose me for my love and enthusiasm of the series. Sometimes the impossible not only knocks on your door, but it asks to stay for tea and scones. Just keep an eye and ear out.
